On May 31, 2000 at approximately 1030 P.M. Menlo Park Police Officers responded to the 900 block of Timothy Lane following several reports of a shooting that just occurred. Officer William Voorhees was the first officer to arrive on the scene where he found victim Travis Virgil Smith laying in a front yard with a gunshot to the right side of his torso. Smith was able to identify himself to Officer Voorhees as well as tell him where the shooting had occurred, as well as provide a description of the man who shot him. Smith told Officer Voorhees that his assailant was a stranger. Smith was transported to Stanford Hospital for treatment of his wound. He was expected to enter surgery early on June 1 and have a long recuperation period. Investigation by Detectives and Officers developed information regarding the identity of the suspect as Daniel Robert Murphy. With the cooperation and assistance of the San Mateo Police Department, Murphy was safely taken into custody in San Mateo at 8:00 A.M. on June 1. Murphy is expected to be booked on charges of attempted murder. Detectives are continuing their investigation and any information regarding this crime would be appreciated.
