Preliminary investigation into the shooting which had occurred at OICW on 9/19/01 has revealed that during a class break, an OICW student, Edward Vejar and another non-student suspect, known only as "Eddie" who had come to class with Vejar, went outside and shot numerous rounds from a handgun in front of the building.

An OICW student, Victor Avina, 24 years of East Palo Alto, was shot several times. An OICW instructor, Alonzo Emery, 50 years of San Mateo, was shot when he exited the building to investigate the gunshots. Detectives discovered today that a third victim had also been shot, but had fled prior to police arrival. The third victim, Francisco Vasquez, 19 years of East Palo Alto, suffered a minor gun shot wound and spoke with Menlo Park Detectives today. All three victims are recovering from non-life threatening injuries.

At the time of the shooting the suspects were reported to have fled in a black sedan possibly a Honda. A Bay Area wide police alert was sent out. The vehicle was later spotted by a San Jose Police Officer. Following a short pursuit, Edward Vejar was taken into custody by the San Jose Police Department and booked into the Santa Clara County Jail. He is charged with carjacking, kidnapping, false imprisonment, resisting arrest, and evading police, as a result of the incidents in San Jose. Numerous charges from the Menlo Park shooting are pending. The second suspect was able to evade capture. Motive for this incident is still under investigation.

The Menlo Park Police are still seeking the second suspect in connection with the shooting. The outstanding man is known only as "Eddie."

He is a Hispanic male in his late teens, approximately 5-07, 180 lbs., with a shaved head, and a large red or orange tattoo of a heart the left side of his neck. (See police sketch below.) He was last seen wearing a gray hooded sweatshirt and jeans.

The suspect may be en route to Southern California, possibly by hitchhiking. He should be considered armed and dangerous and not approached by the public.

Anyone with information on the whereabouts or identification of "Eddie" is asked to call Detective Paul Kunkel or Detective Alex Bouja at (650) 858-3300. For a copy of the sketch, click on the sketch below or contact MPPD Communications at (650) 858-3300.   ###
