FLEETWING (1854)
The U.S. ship FLEETWING was a medium clipper, built at Medford, Massachusetts, by Hayden & Cudworth, for Crowell, Brooks & Co, of Boston, and launched in February 1854. 896/829 tons (old/new measurement); 167 x 34 x 21 ft 8 in (length x beam x depth of hold). The Boston Daily Atlas for 14 February 1852 contains a detailed description of her by Duncan McLean, the paper's marine reporter. There is a rather breezy (i.e., relatively few names and dates) account of the FLEETWING in Octavius T. Howe and Frederick G. Matthews, American Clipper Ships, 1833-1858, vol. 1, Marine Research Society, Publication 13 (Salem, Massachusetts: Marine Research Society, 1926), pp. 175-176. There should be a more scholarly treatment in William L. Crothers, The American-Built Clipper Ship, 1850-1856; Characteristics, Construction, Details (Camden, Maine: International Marine, 1997).
