Palmer List of Merchant Vessels

RACE HOUND (1851)

The U.S. ship RACE HOUND, 499 tons, was built at Thomaston, Maine, in 1851, and registered at New York on 16 February 1852, the same day that she cleared for California; her voyage to California thus almost certainly constituted her first "ocean" voyage.

RALEIGH (1850)
FANNY [1872]

The British ship (later Hamburg bark) RALEIGH was built at London in 1850 (certificate of registry London 6 August 1850). 418/491 tons (old/new measurement). The annual volumes of Lloyd's Register of Shipping for 1851/52 through 1854/55 give her owner as Booth & Co, her master as J. Volum, port of registry London, port of survey London (the volume for 1851/52 also gives Liverpool), and the following destined voyages:

1851/52 - Adelaide; Rio [de Janeiro]
1852/53-1854/55 - Swan River

On 11 April 1854, the RALEIGH was purchased for £7,500 from Volum, London (Capt. Volum was probably part-owner of the vessel, and was acting here as agent for the others), by the Hamburg shipowner Robert M. Sloman, who retained her name, but re-rigged her as a bark. Measured at Hamburg as 175 Commerzlasten; 131.6 x 25.3 x 18.11 Hamburg Füße (1 Hamburg Fuß = .28657 meter), length x beam x depth of hold.
