| The play is a collection of facts and tidbits involving Bette and Joan, travelling back in time to visit them on the set of "Whatever Happened To Baby Jane," jumping forward to the AfterLife set of their new buddy action movie (entitled "Big F------ Guns"), and stops a few places inbetween, like on their movie review program ("Bitchin' 'Bout The Movies") and an "animated cartoon" called "Oscar Schmoscar." | |||||||||||||||||||
| "I've never done a biographical work of any kind, much less a play," says writer-director Rob Matsushita, "and I've also never done a two-character play. But that's what Broom Street is all about: doing something you've never done before and seeing what can happen." Another detail that may throw audiences for a loop is Matsushita's casting: the two women are being played by men--Bette Davis is being played by Dave Durbin (Stiffy, Jeffrey) and Joan Crawford is being played by Nathan Caracter (I Am Star Trek, Meeting Jerry Springer). "I'm not sure how that happened," Matsushita says, "but it just seemed right to have them played by men--which I guess makes it officially a Broom Street play." | |||||||||||||||||||
| "Whatever Happened To Bette And Joan?" is a play about female role models versus female sellouts, about the roles for women in film and in life. "On some level," Matsushita adds, "it's a love story. You can't hate somebody that long and not love them a little. And vice, as they say, versa." | |||||||||||||||||||
| "I don't want the show to seem too serious, though," Matsushita concludes, "I also want to poke a little fun at other shows that are like this." Which shows is he talking about? "I'll tell you in the AfterLife," Matsushita says, with a wink. | |||||||||||||||||||
