Rio Dulce

The Rio Dulce is both a town and a river. The river is gorgeous, lush and connects Lago Izabal to the Bay of Honduras. A 1.5 hour ride brings one through habitats for tropical birds, manatees and even some alligators apparently. At one point a hot spring bubbles up along the shore, spewing sulfurous airs and making quite the little hot tub. The journey ends at Livingston, a black community on the coast, reachable only by boat.

In Rio Dulce we stayed on an eco-farm that primarily raised rubber trees. Cabanas situated at the waterside stood on stilts over the swampy coastline.
