The base form and the Present form A verb is a word or group of words we use to show an action or condition. We play basketball. Action He is a good student. Condition Verbs have five principle parts: the base form, the present form, the present participle or -ing form, the past form, and the past principle. Base Form Talk Present Form Talks Present Participle or -ing form talking Past Form Talked Past Principle Talked Base Form Write Present Form writes Present Participle or -ing form writing Past Form wrote Past Principle written The base form of a verb has no added ending. Verb Base Form live Live dream Dream hope Hope Regular verbs form their present form by adding S to the base form. Base Form Present Form live Lives dream Dreams hope Hopes Here are some speling rules for making the present form: 1. For verbs ending in ss, sh, ch, x, and, o, we, add es: Base Form Present Form dress Dresses brush Brushes watch Watches wax Waxes go Goes 2.
