The base form and the Present form


A verb is a word or group of words we use to show an action or condition.


We play basketball.    Action
He is a good student.    Condition

Verbs have five principle parts: the base form, the present form, the present participle or -ing form, the past form, and the past principle.

The base form of a verb has no added ending.

Regular verbs form their present form by adding   S to the base form.

Here are some speling rules for making the present form:

1. For verbs ending in ss, sh, ch, x, and, o, we, add es:

dress                    Dresses
brush                    Brushes
watch                  Watches
wax                     Waxes
go                       Goes

2. For verbs ending in a consonant plus y, we change the y to i add es:

rely                     Relies
pity                     Pities
supply                Supplies
