Describe the following solutions; be sure to include the affects on a cell.
Isotonic -
· Same concentration of dissolved substances as cell

Hypo tonic -
· Lower concentration of dissolved substances as cell.
· Will cause cell to swell and maybe burst.

Hyper tonic -
· Higher concentration of dissolved substances as cell.
· Will cause cell to shrink and possibly collapse

What is the difference between passive and active transport?
· Passive transport uses no energy; it relies on the concentration gradient.
· Sometimes a cell needs to get a higher concentration of a substance then the outside environment.  It must use energy to do this
· Active transport uses energy to go against the concentration gradient.

Describe the following types of active transport
Pinocytosis -
· Liquids are surrounded by the membrane and pinched off in a pouch and taken into the cell.

Phagocytosis -
· Solids are surrounded by the membrane and pinched off in a pouch and taken into the cell.
· Both methods are forms of endocytosis
· Removal of waste by this method is called exocytosis.

Organization of Cells in Living Things 5-4

What are organs?
· Groups of tissue (made up of cells) that work together to perform a specific function.

What are organ systems?
· Groups of organs that work together to perform a specific function.
