GREENON LOSES TRI-MEET AT FAIRBORN....

Greenon lost to Fairborn and Kenton Ridge in a Tri-Meet at Fairborn. Garrett Lay went 2-0, Kevin Christensen went 2-0, and Casey Wells went 2-0 for the Knights.

The below write up came from the Fairborn Paper:

FAIRBORN – Fairborn's Zach Fulton and Eli Patrick took a gamble on Wednesday night, moving up to heavier weight classes to keep the Fairborn Skyhawks from having to forfeit another one. "We both wrestled up on the Greenon team," said Patrick. "We didn't want to give up the 189 class," added Fulton. The gamble paid off. Both Fulton and Patrick went 2-0 on the night, leading the Skyhawks to two senior night victories as they hosted a tri-meet, beating Kenton Ridge 37-36 and Greenon 24-20. "It's nice to get a couple of wins back-to-back on senior night," said Fairborn coach Ryan Pine. "It was a tight match," he added. "It's tough when you're giving up so many forfeits. There's 14 weight classes, and we had to bump some guys around." The moves all proved to be the right ones in the nightcap. Seniors Fulton and Patrick both scored wins against Greenon, Max Molchan outlasted his opponent at 215 for a 4-1 decision and senior Casey Gullion, despite giving up nearly 40 pounds to his opponent in the heavyweight class, scored an 8-3 decision. Senior Tyler Elliot also took a 13-5 decision at 119. They needed each of the wins, too, as Greenon scored two pins, a disqualification and a decision to rack up 20 points. A forfeit by the Knights at the 103 class gave the 'Hawks all they needed to take the win. Also scoring wins on the night for Fairborn against Kenton Ridge were Drew Britton and Joseph Neel with pins and Micah Quinn via a 6-2 decision. Fulton, who normally wrestles at 160, put his undefeated record on the line against Greenon's 171-pounder, Nick Anthony. Anthony took down Fulton early, but a reversal as the first round closed tied the score at two each. Anthony took the lead on an escape, but Fulton was relentless and brought him down once more to regain the lead. Anthony slipped away again, and again Fulton was right there to haul him back to the mat and take a 6-4 lead into the final round. Early in the third Fulton turned a near-pin into a reversal, gaining the advantage on Anthony and never surrendering it again to hold out for the 10-7 decision and preserve his perfect record. Not that that means anything to the modest Fulton. "It doesn't really matter," said Fulton of staying unbeaten. "State matters. I care more for sectionals, districts, and state." Patrick didn't waste any time in his match at 189, pinning Greenon's Ross Christopher with 12 seconds left in the first. Earlier in the night against Kenton Ridge matters were reversed. Fulton pined his opponent at 160 with one second left in the second round, while it took a third round comeback by Patrick to squeak out a 4-1 victory. For Patrick, though, just being back for his senior season is enough. Patrick missed last season with an injury, and both he and close friend Fulton suffered for it. "Last year was hard," said Patrick. "Coming to every single practice and going out to all the meets, then having to sit there and watch. It was tough." The pair spends much of their time in practice drilling together, but wrestling also eats up much of their spare time as well. Immediately after the match against Greenon was over Patrick was still on the mats grappling. "It's nice to be back and drilling with [Fulton] again," said Patrick. "He's getting better all the time. We're really close in weight, so we always put up a good fight with each other." "And he's getting better by drilling with me," added Fulton. "They've got a lot of energy," laughed Pine afterwards. The team will need it, too, as they get little time off before heading to Colerain on Saturday for the Colerain Duals.
