The author of many books
with pop music information
and owner of perhaps the largest record collection in the world, has
published
excellent lists of all hits to have made the charts of
magazine. He lists all the
tunes to make "Number One"
during a particular year, and resolves their tie by using a points
system
based on overall chart performance. Next come all the songs to
peak
at #2 during that year, and so on, all the way down to #100.

The really great news is that a very
ambitious individual,
screen named Lancefer, has put the essence of all this information into
the
form of an Excel spreadsheet. And you can download here (click
icon, bottom
right) a cut and dried version of Lancefer's work (file is nick named
"Lance.xls").
It contains the most important data for years 1955 through 1999, namely:
(1) Year peaked & rank (in "yy_nnn" format)
(2) Artist name
(3) Peak position
(4) Song title
(5) Song length (time "m:ss")
(6) Chart debut (date "mm/dd/yy")
