Have students:
  • Make your own list before and after seeing Mr. Rowen's
  • Make your list and then have to eliminate 5 items because they won't fit. Which 5 items and why?
  • Come up with explanations to why I brought 10 of the items I brought
  • Invent and write a story where one of the items I brought saves the day
  • Write a story using at least 10 items I brought
  • Make your own class I Spy books, using old magazines cut up into collages

    Teachers note:
I, Mr. Rowen, did this one year with my class and it worked great as a centers activity, when finished with work activity, or all class activity. We worked together in groups to create large pages filled with all sorts of things. Then I numbered them and laminated them (I hope and pray for you, Highland Teachers) and made a little clear pocket at the bottom of each page. Then each kid could take a slip of paper that fit into the pocket and write their own "I spy..." for each page. We even began to make a little bank for all the slips of paper organized by page numbers. Then kids could create a different book each time. It was a phenomenal ELD activity with loads of possibilities. Trust me it's great.
