China is a very, very old country. Yet it is a modern country too. However, it is impossible to go anywhere in China without being reminded of the past. There are historic buildings and sites all around the country. And often, like in this picture taken in Xian (pronounced She-on), a building that is hundreds of years old sits right in the middle of a bustling, busy, modern intersection.

This is the bell tower of Xian, which used to have an enormous bell which, in the days before watches and clocks, would tell people when to go to work. There is a drum tower near by which would beat the drum when it was time to go home.

These two towers still stand right among neon billboards and racing traffic.
