![]() In 1974, two peasants digging a well found something totally unexpected. They found an underground vault, like a big underground room or cave, made originally for wood holding up dirt. It was bigger than a football field and inside were thousands of life sized clay statues of soldiers. Today they are called the Terracotta Warriors. Over 2,000 years ago, an emperor had wanted to be buried after he died with an army of warriors. It was incredible to see. There were so many of them and they were really well preserved.
