It was incredible what people would carry up through the mountains. Men called porters would bring food and supplies up to the hotels and farms up, sometimes 5 and 6 days walk from the road, in the mountains. They would carry loads of 100, 150, even over 200 pounds! On their heads!

I saw men carrying pieces of wood tewnty feet long so they would have to walk sideways through towns. I saw men carrying mattresses. I saw a man carrying another very old man on his back, by a rope over the top of his head.

Because they are the roads between villages, the footpaths are very nice and even are sometimes paved with slate stones fitting together perfectly. And the best part, no one complains that they have to walk.

They just do it.
