All Day in the Garden-Our Full Day Program

Cassady Elementary and all of the schools in the Columbus Public District are all day Kindergarten programs. A full day kindergarten has many advantages but as with everything in life it does have it's disavantages as well!

The Advantages

I really like teaching full day Kindergarten it gives me the time that I believe is necessary to give each student a quality education. With a longer day I do not feel that there are as many time issues and it prepares the children for staying all day in first grade. Before Kindergarten most children have already been immersed in an all-day preschool or daycare setting which will hopefully make the transition into Kindergarten easier!

A full day program also allows for more hands-on child driven activities. I have time to ask my students questions that require them to process and reflect after each activity. My goal is for each child to have their own meaningful learning experience that is dependent on his/her prior knowledge. The student will use this prior knowledge to construct a link or connection to the new experience and formulate a new knowledge.

The Disadvantages

Let's face it some children are just not ready to stay all day! There are always a few children that get tired and lose focus by the second half of the day. We try to prevent this by including a rest time after lunch and by implementing exciting fun lessons.
