Beck Mutations | ![]() |
This album followed Beck's wildly successful and acclaimed Odelay, which started the mish-mash, something-from-everything style that has been important in music lately. With Mutations, Beck returns with an album very different than Odelay. It is mainly acoustic, and while the diverse instrumentation is still there (see audio), the songs stick closer to a single trend, acoustic and folk-like. But the hidden track rocks it hard along with Pet Sounds-ish harmony, sort of a hint of what's to come when Beck returns to his diverse style on his next album (see links).
Highlights:
Nobody's Fault But My Own
One of my all-time
favorites. It includes some of my all-time favorite instruments:
the Sitar, and those other Indian instruments that sound so good!
Beck does folk, only it's somehing that the folks in Bombay could
enjoy. (Well, proabably not)
Cancelled Check
A song about
redneck life appears again on Mutations, just like
"Sissyneck" on Odelay. Has a great country
steel guitar.

Fault But My Own"
