Nirvana Unplugged in New York |
![]() |
I just recently picked this record up after it had been in the ol' CD bin for quite a long time. I remembered how great it was. Even though Nirvana did give us all of the Creeds and other shit bands now, they are still most definetely the most improtant group of the decade.
On Unplugged, the tunes come to the front. It was very odd at the beginning to hear Nirvana with acoustic guitars, but the fact that the songs all hold up extremel well, and in some cases provide a totally new dimension, is a nod to the song-writing capabilities Kurt Cobain.
There's some great covers on this record too. My favorite track, probably, "Jesus Doesn't Want Me For A Sunbeam" is a Vaselines song featuring Krist Novoselic on accordion. Also, there's "The Man Who Sold The World" by David Bowie, and a Leadbelly (!) tune, "Where Did You Sleep Last Night."
Highlights
Pennyroyal Tea
Featuring Kurt solo, this song is a far cry
from the In Utero version. Instead of the heavy fuzz to
add empahsis to the chorus, Kurt just has to yell a little
louder. His voice was great, one of the most recognizable and
emotional in all of rock.
All Apologies
If this performance doesn't get
you, you are satan himself.
Where Did You Sleep Last Night
Same with this one. Kurt's voice is the main
instrument, and hearing this postumously is very creepy.
