John Wesley Hughes

Conversation with Frank Griffith of Bakersville, NC who knew John Wesley when Griffith was a child (June 11, 2002)
John Wesley was a tall man. He was about 7'3" tall. Martha could stand under his arms when they were outstretched.

Remembers John Wesley driving a model T with son Park at the bottom of Tipton Hill. Frank was in school, Tipton Hill Elementary. (School was three stories tall. Torn down and replaced with new brick school.) Park was driving too fast and overturned the car attempting to make the sharp turn at the bottom of the hill. Apparently no one was hurt; they got out and flipped the car back over and went about their business.

John Wesley was known as "the bank". He gave frequent loans to people. Frank Griffith recalls that twenty five dollars during the depression was alot of money and John Wesley always had it to give to folks in need.
