"Major" Jonathan Tipton III

Great-great-great-grandfather Major Jonathan Tipton III was born on October 23, 1750, in Frederick County, Virgina; he was a famed Washington County, North Carolina-Tennessee pioneer, and Indian fighter and Revolutionary War hero. according to the history, he was second in command to John Sevier at the Battle of Kin's Moutain. Major Jonathan was embroiled in the conflict between his older brother, Colonel John tipton, and Colonel John Sevier over the formation of the state of Franklin, in which the Tipton forces at one time caputred Colonel Sevier and imprisoned him in Morganton, North Carolina. He moved his family across the Unaka Mountains in 1797 into the Toe River Valley, where he founded the village of Tipton Hill. (from Tim Tipton: More Tipton family stories)
