Stage-3 restoration...Completed April, 2006 |
![]() |
When i received the email that said "you've twisted my arm, i'll sell you my Sidepiper", I was a happy man! Thats CZ-Marty Karadanis in the pickup who uttered those words of good news in July, 2004 and for whom im greatful. He also drove over 400 miles one way to deliver my new prize. Thanks Marty... Sidepipe 969 CZ's are fast becoming the next collectable prize of all motocross CZ's just behind the rare Twinpipe 968's. This one was built with our pristine Stage-3 original treatment paying close attention to factory stock details. Feel free to contact us with any questions. We hope you enjoy the results... |

AFTER |
<<< 969 chassis is being stripped down. A full inspection of every part and fastener begins as the bike is dismantled. Note some non-original equipment here. |
<<< Frame has been fully inspected and repaired of broken tabs and steer stop. Swingarm joint ready. Misc items taken care of before blast and PC. |
Frame back from PC. Went with 70% semi-gloss black. All threaded holes, joints and mountings are cleaned and ready for final assy. >>> |
<<< All the chrome pieces were inspected and taken to Southbay Chrome, Santa Ana, CA. Kickstarter is in excellent shape, shock covers? Lets wait and see. |
<<< Every hardware piece is inspected or replaced with NOS parts. Bertus JAWA/CZ was our source on the original items we needed. |
Back from ALLOC Plating, Industy, CA. Everything was Zinc plated. Rear steel brake plate, chainguide, brake and shifter levers were Nickle plated. >>> |
<<< We wanted steel-chrome spokes, so Buchanan's supplied us with the proper tap to modify the original brass nipples. Do not re-chrome old steel spokes. Danger lurks! |
New Buchanan 9ga steel spokes with the "B" removed. They were understanding of removing them for this original restoration. >>> |
<<< This is ugly and what you usually find when a bike is left outside. These steel rims will need an expert plater to save and get them back to original. |
Thanks to Southbay Chrome again, the rims came out fantastic! Looking within 6" you cannot detect any pitting. These appear brand new again. >>> |
<<< Do you see the hack job somebody did here? The sprocket bolt holes were drilled out because they couldnt find original bolts. It will need to be replaced. |
<<< Swingarm appears in good shape and not bent after inspection. All hardware is original and also in good shape. Brake stay brace is near perfect. |
<<< Hacked up rear hub and front hub with 8ga spoke holes. Will replace both hubs to get the SP back to original. Surprises at every corner! |
<<< 360 engine has great compression, runs very strong. New seals, a good cleaning and it's ready. Will be back-dated with the Jikov intake system. |
<<< A little tarnished but within tolerence at 0.004 shirt clearence. Rings at 0.018 gap. Compression is 147psi. Rod bearing has no noticable slop. |
<<< Top-end has a stock bore 380 CAMCO piston. Trans is good, clutch will be rebuilt with new springs and NOS bronze plates. |
<<< KONI style shocks, 13" eye to eye. Decided to stay with the longer shock for bike-stance. As you can see they need a lot of work, but they dont leak. Original SP shocks are coming. |
<<< Original case screws need a lot of attention here. One would think theses are no longer useful. Dont throw them away! Look to the right. |
<<< Some of the cases had to be replaced, but the SP ignition case had to be saved for its rarity. Clamps, nipples and braces to the polisher. |
Its amazing what you can do if you have the patience. Screws were cleaned, filed and buffed on a bench polishing wheel. Check for bent ones. >>> |
We decided to retain the original grain on the aluminum, so the polisher just buffed as needed. Fork sliders were badly nicked so they had to be sanded and polished. >>> |
<<< The inner fender/airbox is in great shape. Repaired a couple worn out mounting holes with fiberglass cloth and resin. Sand up and its ready for paint. |
Southbay Chrome and Bright-Shark Powdercoating had their way here. The shocks turned out bitchen! We rebuilt the rubber grommets. Ready to mount with NOS bolts. >>> |
<<< Marty said the tank was in good shape with a nice gas cap. He was right. There are a couple small dents, no rust. Sending out for metal-smithing job. |
<<< The Sidepipe chamber and header are the single most difficult items to both find and repair on a SP. This header will need to be replaced, the chamber repaired. |
<<< Marty knowing we were wanting to restore this bike was gracious enough to throw in an original seat with the deal. A very nice piece only needing cleaning and a preservative. |
Original SP bars, leather rim locks, kickstarter with NOS rubber and fork caps. All pretty and ready to install. >>> |
Close-up of engine in the frame. These are very easy to install and align up. Original NOS plug wire and caps. NOS cables, lever rubbers. Original case vent hoses. >>> |
Cleaned up CAMCO piston installed and pinned into place. Rings were decarboned including the piston grooves. A new Bertus gasket and its ready to assemble. >>> |
Engine buttoned up in frame with re-plated original hardware. Coils and JIKOV 33mm carb are in place. Levers and plates are finalized. JOHN DEERE yellow plate paint is used.. >>> |
Rear wheel assembled and ready for tire installation and mount on the chassis. Correct 9ga spokes again. Front looks the same. The project is rolling right along.. >>> |
53T sprocket is Zinc plated, NOS CZ chain. Numberplates are aluminum copies by Bertus JAWA/CZ. Original NOS Barum tires. >>> |

Freshly hammered out and repainted. Bertus sent the tank back to his metalsmith. Painted burnt orange and penstriped locally. NOS petcock is installed. Original cap is hand polished. >>> |
The chassis is in final assembly awaiting fender paint, pipe and tank. Building CZ's in the den is different, but make sure the wife approves and keep it clean! >>> |
Freshly painted in polyurethane, the fender group turned out nicely. Everything was pre-fitted on the chassis before paint. >>> |
Finished up rear brake assembly. Backing plate is Nickle plated, sprocked and hardware is Zinc plated. NOS brake rod and all the fixings. >>> |
Pipe was 10 months coming! Patience they kept telling me. I can say that it was worth the wait! Dents removed, stinger rebuilt and hand sculpting made for a great chrome job. >>> |

The original seat untouched and cleaned up! Original snap is intact, seat base is very clean with no cracks. Foam is still firm, overall a 9.5 grade. >>> |
