Exercise 1-Adverbs modifying Verbs Underline the adverbs in each sentence. Then decide which questions each adverb answers and write it next to the sentence: Where? When? How? Or To what extent?

 

1. One of California’s main attractions is the coastline, which stretches continuously along the western border of the state.

 

2. Some people enjoy watching the gray whales as these whales migrate yearly to the California coast.

 

3. Others intently view the tide pools for hours at a time.

 

Exercise 2-Adverbs modifying adjectives—Underline the adverbs in each sentence and then draw an arrow to the adjective it modifies.

 

1. California’s central valley has soil abundantly rich in nutrients.

 

2. The state’s warm weather allows for an unusually long growing season.

 

3. Farmers are able to grow many different kinds of fruits and vegetables.

 

4, The broccoli and spinach that are grown in California are dark green and nutritious.

 

5. California avocados are tasty, but they have a very high fat content.

 

Exercise 3-Adverbs modifying other Adverbs In each sentence, underline the adverb that modifies another adverb by answering the question To what extent? Draw an arrow to the adverb modified.

 

1. Many animals have adapted quite successfully to life in the California desert.

 

2. The grizzly bear almost entirely disappeared from the state in the 1920’s.

 

3. Cougars and bobcats too greatly populated the foothills and woodlands.

 

4. They very often prey on herds of deer and other small animals.

 

5. The mountain lion population has only slightly increased over the past twenty years.
