Asian Immigration to the United States

Introduction: Students will use Web resources, Microsoft Excel, MapMakers Toolkit, and Microsoft Word to complete a statistical analysis of Asian immigration to the United States.

Task: Students will follow the steps below to complete their statistical analysis.

  1. Select five different countries from the Asian American Heritage Web site from Scholastic Network: http://teacher.scholastic.com/activities/asian-american/visit.htm

  1. Use Microsoft Excel to list the countries on a spreadsheet (see example below)*.

* Students should check their e-mail to get a spreadsheet template to collect data.

  1. Follow directions from the Teamboard to learn how to make a graph of total immigrants in the United States for the five countries you have chosen. You should also include notes for when the peak immigration has been, and what states have the most immigrants from each country.

  1. Use the MapMakers Toolkit to zoom in on the US map. Click the “Draw” tab and find the Stamp tool. Locate the Asian flags, and stamp the flags of countries from your statistical analysis on the states that have the most immigrants from each country (see example below).

  1. Use Microsoft Word to complete your statistics report. Start with a proper header:

Date                                                                                                          Your Name 4-W

Immigration Statistics

Start with a topic sentence about the purpose of your study. Explain how you found your facts, and what facts were most noteworthy. Write why you thought the most noteworthy facts were interesting. Include a statement about the peak years of immigration, and write a question that you will have to follow-up on later.
