Luann claims that her homework increased by 50% since the size of her textbooks is 21" which is 7" more than last year. What is wrong with Luann's assumption?
Luann's calculation is correct, but her conclusion is wrong. Taking the difference from the two measurments and dividing the original by the difference will result in a percentage increase or decrease. 21 - 14 = 7. 7/14 = .50 = 50%. The size of her textbooks increased by 50%, not her homework.
Luann should have measured the number of pages or problems and compared these figures to last years. This calculation would give a percentage increase or decrease in the amount of homework.
