2-17-99 - The small wall is complete, with only a few small changes.

Originally, the wall was going to be smooth. Though I never really liked that idea, but it was the only thing I could see in my head. I was about to build the wall, but I decided to make a model first. Apparently the arches were too far apart, and the pattern that I originally designed, is now going to be to small. So I re-designed it, it came out to be more pieces, but thought, "eh, what the heck". Apparently, the model I used to check for the right size, was only for that side. The pattern was too long for the other sides.

At that point I could have cut them all down to size, but then the sections could have been to short. And, they might not of centered as well. I wound up attaching the curves to the inside of the opening. This allowed the wall to be (more or less), flush to the arches.

But it still needed something. It just looked so, blah. Columns may look nice there, I thought. I went out to fuse some use a mold technique that I made up (I'll probably explain that one later on, towards the end of the lamp). The columns came out pretty well, but not well enough, and I didn't feel like trying over, so I settled for clear glass rods. The rods are glued in with epoxy. Messy stuff that epoxy, and it set's up way to fast, or slow depending on how you look at it. I had 12 of those tiny things to put in. Dabbing a little glue on each end, and pushing them in. But as I pushed them in, some came off on my hand. And each one just got a little messier. To make problems worse, some of them dried crooked. But again it's supposed to look kind of old, so a slightly crooked column is sort of ok, though I wish it never happened.

Everything was in, but I had a new problem. The walls (besides still be a little lopsided from the dome), were wider then the plans called for. So now I have to figure out a way to blend in the small floor.

This shows some of the overlap on the back of the small walls. Due to a slight mis-calculation. It is OK however, because no one will ever see it (except for right at this very second).
