by Christopher Stern

Slow modulation a la Yo la Tengo, and quirky melodic vocals, whining, sarcastic, sweet and somehow disappointed.

Brown-Star knows how to play a catchy tune, and how to make it pulse forward on nothing but rythm guitar, a little finger pickin' and an occasional base line.

It may be the recording technique - Moon Trent usually sounds like two people singing at once. Funny too, in an underhanded kind of way. Goofy, pretty falsettos back up their cover of
'Church of the Poison Mind' along with Trent's squeeky vocal rendition of the harmonica intro.

Trent's voice occasionally houses the edge of a snarl on cuts such as
'Don't Look Back,' then the lyrics come in with the comic relief: "You treat me rough, I treat you blind, But I don't care/Long as I got something don't smell too bad to wear." 'Free Kitten' is the
shit. A touching little Yukelele tune advertizing a free kitten: "Mom says get rid of kitty/someone please/He has got no disease."

I've got no knowledge of what these guys have been listening to, but here's my list: VU and everyone who's listned to them, along with a helpful dose of the Violent Femmes. Ask Moon Trent at 415-441-0881 or
moontrent@hotmail.com. Better yet, check out Brown-Star at The Lost & Found, 1353 Grant Ave. in North Beach on Thursday March 20.
