Calovaer
DESCRIPTION: The Calovaer is one of the many creations of a group of crazed magicians who had a fascination with mixing and matching animal body parts. The Calovaer has the body, neck, tail and legs of a dragon with a thick coat of bear fur covering it from end to end. The head looks like that of a large wolf with a maw of too-many teeth and crooked antlers curving forward. Its paws are like those of a grizzly's, and it's neck and chest are covered with natural armor and spikes where nipples should be (all Calovaer are female). Its tail is tipped with a large scorpion stinger. The Calovaer are perpetually angry and bitter. Wishing it had never existed, it attacks any all things in order to end its life. Unfortunately for the Calovaer, they are a hearty stock.
COMBAT/TACTICS: The Calovaer is a direct creature, preferring large parties, large creatures to end its life, thus it will fight with little regard to its own life. It will not ambush, sneak or trick its opponents. The Calovaer charges, goring with its antlers (1-4 points of damage), snapping with its teeth (1-8) and slashing with its front bear paws (1-8). Anyone at the beasts flank or rear will be attacked by the scorpion-like stinger with does 1-6 pts. of damage and injects a poison. If the victim does not save vs. poison, he will begin to lose 1-4 HP per round. The underbelly of the Calovaer is it's strongest armor class (-1) and anyone who attempts to stab the creature from beneath has a 20% chance of being gored by one of the many spikes (causing 1-4 points of damage). The only saving grace to killing a Calovaer is its pure hatred. Some parties have been known to trick the creature into running off cliffs.
ECOLOGY: All Calovaer are females, and are born pregnant, and after gestating over the next 15 years they give birth to 1-2 cubs who have half the of the adults stats. At this age they remain hidden until they are bigger, but are born with teeth and claws and ready to kill. Since the mother has spikes on its belly instead of nipples, the young suffer feelings of rejection and abandonment, only staying with the mother to observe her manner of killing, feeding off the carcasses she leaves behind. After a year, the sibling rivalry grows too strong and the cubs separate. If a Calovaer is killed, it will speak only one phrase it has ever learned, "Thank you."
