Policies & Procedures
Ms. Culp – English I & II
Clayton Valley High School
The goal of the high school education is to prepare you, both intellectually and socially, for the professional world beyond these walls. As part of that necessary social acculturation, you are expected to practice professional protocols on a daily basis, including punctuality and preparation, appropriate social interactions, task completion, and active participation. Learning these skills today will earn you promotions tomorrow. In that vein, the following will constitute the workplace protocols of Room A-4.
Punctuality and Preparation
Arrive early for class and be in your seat with all required materials when the bell rings. Required materials include paper, sharpened pencils, black or blue pens, the book currently being utilized in class, an outside reading book, and English homework to be submitted or worked on during the period. You will not be excused to retrieve materials from lockers or use the restroom. Each student will be allotted two emergency five-minute hall passes per semester. Do not bring food or unauthorized electronic devices into the room. You may bring bottled beverages, but please be respectful of the classroom environment and clean up after yourself.
Appropriate Social Interactions
A quiet, peaceful environment is the most conducive to information intake and processing. Raising your hand to speak will ensure that your opinion is heard in full and that you will comprehend fully the viewpoints of your classmates. Shouting, interrupting, and disruption will result in removal of classroom privileges. Likewise, the rules for mass class discussion apply to small group activities as well. Be respectful and polite, even in your dissention. Finally, there is no possible way to know what will cause unintentional offense to your classmates, so please acknowledge the differences between each of us and frame your language, conversation topics, and dress to the accepted school guidelines.
Assignment Completion
As your completed work is a reflection of yourself, complete all assignments neatly and in full by the due date. Messy assignments will be given a zero. Use an eraser or word processor to ensure acceptable work. You will be allowed three two-day late homework passes over the course of the school year. Use these wisely; begin your work early to avoid the need for extra time. Papers, projects, and working assignments are not eligible for a late pass. All late homework will be submitted to the tray on the front teacher desk with a completed “Late Work Certificate” stapled to the front. If you are absent with an excused absence that has been cleared through the office, place the missed work in the late work folder with an “Excused Absence Certificate” stapled to the front at the next class session. It will be processed after the reports are issued by the Attendance Office.
Active Participation
The most integral part of your job is your enthusiasm for the job, creativity, and willingness to contribute to the greater good. Much of your grade in this class will be determined by your informed, polite, enthusiastic response to both factual and hypothetical questions posed by myself and others. A very few extra credit opportunities will be offered throughout the year; it is through participation that your grade can be raised.
Repercussions
Unfortunately, rules are useless without consequences for their infringement. Therefore, a variety of penalties are available, including removal from the classroom, first period detention, referral, parent phone calls and emails, and zero participation credit for the period. Likewise, however, the rewards for fulfilling all classroom requirements are plentiful, including student of the month awards, parent phone calls and emails, free homework passes, and extra participation credit.
Grading Policy
Grades are not rounded.
100-90%: A
89-80%: B
79-70%: C
69-60%: D
59-0%: F
Your agreement to these behavior requirements is mandatory for your continuation in this course. Please return this contract with both your and your guardian’s signatures. I look forward to a delightful school year! If you have any questions or comments, please email me at culpj@mdusd.k12.ca.us or look up the class web page at http://www.oocities.org/msjeannaculp/
