Math Homework Mastering a skill requires a fair amount of focused practice. Learning new content does not happen quickly--it requires practice spread out over time. For this reason, homework is an essential part of this class. Its purpose is to practice the concepts we learned and practiced in class that day. Students will already have a high degree of familiarity with the concepts, due to our work in class. Students have the responsibility to ask for clarification if any points are unclear to them during class, so that they will know what to do at home. Students also have the opportunity to come in after school for extra help. Parent Involvement in homework should be kept to a minimum. This does not mean parents should not help "facilitate" homework, but parents should be careful not to solve content problems for students (see Parental Involvement in General Information section). Students ultimately have to show mastery of the content for themselves. Students will have Math homework virtually every night, Monday through Thursday. Check the planner or the website for homework assignments. Math homework is worth ten or more points per day. In order to receive the total possible points, the following criteria must be met:
If the above criterion is not met, points will be deducted. In some cases students are asked to "redo" the assignment. It is then their responsibility to seek out the help they need in order to complete the assignment successfully. A "redo" gives students one extra day to "redo" the assignment with no penalty on their grade. Grades There are three things that students will be graded on.
A = 90-100% of
possible points Resources
Extra Credit Extra credit is not to replace
regular work, but is to help those students who have done the regular
work, but may have a few low scores they would like to improve--so, in
order to do extra credit, the regular work must be done first.
Exceptions are as follows: Quiz Corrections If you miss problems on a test or quiz you may make up half the points missed by doing the following: 1. Check out a test from Ms. London for the prior Friday’s quiz. (Return it in the same condition in which you receive it.) 2. Using your answer sheet, determine which problems you missed. 3. Copy the problem(s) missed onto a separate piece of paper labeled “Week ___ Quiz Corrections.” 4. Do the problem(s) correctly, showing all work. 5. For each problem, write a sentence telling why you originally missed it. 6. Attach your original answer sheet to the Quiz Correction sheet and turn it in, along with the copy of the test you checked out, no later than the next Friday. Family Fun Activities Each chapter includes games or activities for the family to do to help their student with the concepts being taught. To receive extra credit, do the activity, then parent or guardian will sign that it was completed. These are due the day of the correlating chapter test.
