  • THUNDERHEART (1992): Val ironed his own shirts to help him get inside the skin of a FBI agent.
  • TOMBSTONE (1993): Val learned to play the piano and practiced a Chopin nocturne every day for four months for just ninety seconds of screen time.
  • HEAT (1995): Val flew to Folsom prison for half a day to get the prison feel for his character.
  • AT FIRST SIGHT (1999): Val learned to ice skate, to give massages and he extensively explored the feeling of being blind by inserting contacts that rendered him totally blind and then going out on the streets of N.Y.C.
