SAND:
(wrote and directed - Juilliard audition piece)
"I wrote my own piece as I couldn't find anything that would be fresh. They'd heard everything and I knew that, so I decided to do my own thing and see how it went."
HOW IT ALL BEGAN:
(co-authored with Juilliard Group 10)
"There were no examples of what we were learning. The search for acting led to my co-authoring a play to integrate what we were learning - the mechanics of voice production, etc. I graduated on Friday, and we teched on Monday and opened a week later. It was supposed to run three weeks, and it played all summer."
HAMLET (1989):
as Hamlet for the Colorado Shakespeare Festival
"The role was written by a consummate actor. Shakespeare has a need - not a desire, a need - to entertain. He could convince you black was white. He knew so much about the human condition. I think he gave himself a challenge with Hamlet, the ultimate challenge. There isn't just one single answer to that question. You can do absolutely anything with the role. It can be played as many different ways as actors are made."
'TIS PITY SHE'S A WHORE (1992):
as Giovanni for Joseph Papp's Public Theatre
"It's the first Jacobean tragedy the Public's ever done. I guess Joe Papp didn't find him appealing. And Joanne Akailitis is directing, who's now the artistic director there and she's amazing. I've never had more fun. She's really exciting to work with and her ideas for the Public are fantastic. She thinks it should be the public theatre and wants to do more free theatre and more, more, kind of...a larger scope - poetry and music and to make it a place where you know that you can go and have an interesting evening and it doesn't cost $200 like Broadway. It's exciting - there's a lot of shows opening on Broadway but I really...I'd work for Joanne any time. What she's going for in her theatre anyway - very ambitious and vital and the play's quite that. And I get to kill everyone at the end so it's sort of a nice way to end the evening."
