Midnight Cravings
by Julie Cantrell

X*X*X*X*X*X*X*X*X*X*X*X*X*X*X*X*X*X

Crack!

The tiny seed splits under the pressure of my teeth as
my tongue works out the little treat hidden inside. I
spit the remaining shell into the small wastebasket
beside my bed, only to realize that half of it is still
clinging to my lips fused by a strand of moisture from
my mouth.

Christ, I hate sunflower seeds.

Salty foods have always been your flavor, while I
have found myself seduced by decadent sweets. Give
me Hershey's over popcorn any day.

So, imagine my surprise when I found myself scrounging
around my apartment at midnight desperately searching
for a bag of *David* brand sunflower seeds that I knew
you had left here. I just *had* to have one.

One seed turned into three bags.

Like you, the tiny snack proved to be addictive. So
addictive that after finishing the first bag, I hopped
into my car looking for an all night convenience store.

My pantry now looks like your wet dream. Bags upon
bags of sunflower seeds.

The disgusting things!

Crack!

Damn! Part of the shell gets stuck between my teeth. I
try to work it out with my tongue, but no amount of
jiggling seems to help.

Stupid seed.

I sigh in resignation as I roll from my bed. I'm just
going to have to get up and pee anyway, so I may as
well kill two birds with one stone. Dozens of shells
slip from my protruding belly into the floor.

Damn, messy seeds.

I relieve my straining bladder quickly, then wash my
hands. I notice that my fingers have started to swell
a little. I used to have such pretty hands. Seeing
my chubby little stub-like fingers suddenly depresses
me. Before I realize what's happening, fat tears slide
down my slightly rounded cheeks.

God, what's wrong with me? All I wanted was some
dental floss, and now I'm standing in the stark light
of my bathroom crying like there's no tomorrow.

Maybe there is no tomorrow. I don't know if I want
another tomorrow without you.

Oh God, Mulder. I miss you so much. I wish you were
here to tease me. You would hug me and tell me that
I'm beautiful, even when I think I look like a whale.
You'd wipe away my irrational tears with your graceful,
lithe fingers and kiss me softly on the cheek. You
would reassure me and tell me that everything is
going to be fine.

You would even share your sunflower seeds with me.

I wash my face and take a good look at myself in the
mirror. My eyes are red and puffy. They want to
look happy and overjoyed, but they're filled with
sadness. My cheeks are flushed with fear instead of
desire. And my lips are swollen from too much salt
instead of your kisses.

Tears threaten again, but I swallow them back and
reach for the floss. Once the offending shell is
removed, I turn away from the awful truth of the
mirror and to the solace of my bed.

And there you are...

"Mulder?"

For a brief moment, I fear that I've succumbed to
the madness that has threatened to steal my mind
during the last seven months.

How could this be? How could you just appear in
my bed like I've imagined you would so many times?

A lingering breeze whispers over my skin drawing
my attention to a window that was previously
locked. Now, it's open wide and providing an
entry for the cool evening air to flutter my
bedroom curtains.

Perhaps it provided an entry for something or
someone other than the wind.

As quickly as my rounded form will allow me, I
cross the room and pull the window down until
it smacks closed. I lock it tightly and shiver
at the thought of someone entering my home.

Behind me, you moan.

It's then that I know you are real and not a
delusion. For some unknown reason, they have
decided to return you to me and to your future.

Awkwardly, I crawl onto the bed next to your
unconscious form. I check for a pulse and am
elated to find it steady underneath the tips
of my fingers. Your breathing seems normal
and I can find no signs of trauma.

"Mulder?" I ask again, this time while tapping
the side of your beautiful face gently. I'm
greeted by a soft moan and a fluttering of your
lashes.

A couple more taps and you look at me with
brief confusion, then with a love and adoration
that only you can provide.

"Sc-Scully?"

My tears return, but without the previous sadness.
This time the only tears I cry are with joy. My
arms are around you in an instant begging for proof
that this isn't a dream. Your arms quickly return
the favor and stroke my spine with gentle firmness.

Your slender hands cup my face as we reluctantly
pull away from one another. Your own water filled
eyes sweep over my pregnant form in awe. Finally,
your questioning gaze meets mine. I nod in affirmation
of the silent inquiry you have made.

No words have to be spoken as your mouth finally
covers mine. In this brief moment, I realize that
it wasn't the sunflower seeds I was craving.

It was the taste of your kisses.

The End.

Notes: I wasn't going to do it. I wasn't going to
write another post-ep, but alas, I couldn't resist.
The idea came to me when my mom picked up a bag of
sunflower seeds. I'm really fond of them, but on
a whim, I stuck one in my mouth and found that I
couldn't stop eating them. So, naturally, I came
found myself imagining this wonderful scene of
Scully craving sunflower seeds. Wouldn't that
be a lovely way to wink at the audience to let
them know that this baby *is* Mulder's child?

I think so. :)

Also, I just didn't have it in me to write a
story where Mulder didn't come home. I just
couldn't do it.

As always, I love feedback. Please don't be offended
if I don't get back to you right away, though. I
often find that real life tends to interfere when it
comes to answering my e-mail. However, I do
appreciate each and every comment that I receive
and I take advice to heart.

ThanX!
