PRESIDENT’S COLUMN – Carol Warren, Vice-President                              MTFEA -2001

As I am writing this column this month, our President Ed Phillips is undergoing a medical procedure which is keeping him from being able to do this column.  Please keep him in your thoughts.  The MTFEA is off to a running start this year and had a fantastic meeting last month highlighting Black History.  I would like to thank the Federal Aviation Agency and Mr. Milton Jones for hosting our February meeting.  Everyone enjoyed the tours and came away with a better understanding of the importance of the FAA.  Our speaker was Mr. Lelan Statom, Channel 5 Weatherman, and he did a splendid job.  We were thrilled by the increase in our attendance and look forward to an increase with every meeting we have this year.

I would like to thank Ms. Melissa Cothron for all of her efforts in putting the newsletter together.  We hope that all agency heads will take advantage of this tool to share information with other agencies.

I would like to announce with great pleasure that Colonel Kounce with the U.S. Army Reserves, will be our LFCC and Mr. Ruben Rodriguez, of the U.S. Post Office, will be our Campaign Chair.  You will be hearing more about the CFC Campaign in the near future.

I look forward to seeing you on March 20 for our luncheon.  This month's meeting will be held in the Estes Kefauver Building, Cafeteria Conference Room B.  We will be celebrating Woman's History Month and will have a woman's history display and two speakers who will speak from their own perspectives- Ms. Paula Schroth, the Federal Woman's coordinator, and Ms. Christi Ray, Press Secretary for Congressman Bob Clement.  Please come and support the Woman's History Month Program.

NEWSLETTER- Melissa Cothron, Chairperson Communications

Our goal is to ensure that every Federal agency in the middle Tennessee area receives information on local training, resources and other items of interest to Federal employees.  I have been fortunate in having Gaye Parnell with the Internal Revenue Service and Bill Peoples with the Corps of Engineers volunteer to work on the Communications Committee.  If you would like to share information with other Federal agencies, please e-mail your information to Melissa Cothron at e-mail: mrcoth62@m1.irs.gov. or you can fax it to 736-5730.

APRIL FEA LUNCHEON HONORING OUR ADMINISTRATIVE PERSONNEL  - Diane Frost

April is the month to honor our administrative personnel.  We will be having a special luncheon meeting on April 17, at the Fellowship Hall, First Baptist Church, corner of 7th and Broadway, Nashville.  Parking will be free in the church parking lot which is behind the church.  The luncheon will be buffet style with chicken, roasted red potatoes, almond green beans, rolls, pecan pie and tea.  The cost per person is $12.00 which will cover the cost of the luncheon and rental of the Fellowship Hall.  Ms. Patsy Pagan, motivational speaker and past President of the Toastmasters International of Nashville, will be speaking on "Working as a Team (Administrative Personnel and Managers/Supervisors).  This will be a great topic and one that we can all gain from hearing.  This will be a great time for your guest/s to meet personnel from different organizations in the Middle Tennessee Federal community.  In order to make this a worthwhile event for our honored guests, we are asking that you please send a photo of your administrative person with their name/agency to Diane Frost at e-mail: diane.a.frost@lrn02.usace.army.mil or mail it to her at U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, ATTN: Diane Frost, CELRN-RE, P.O. Box 1070, Nashville, TN  37202.  All reservations and pictures need to be to Diane Frost by April 10th.  Let's plan on making this event a well-attended and memorable event.
PUBLIC SERVICE RECOGNITION WEEK SURVEY

Public Service Recognition Week, celebrated the first Monday through Sunday in May since 1985, is a time set aside to educate Americans about the broad variety of services provided by government.  The week is also an opportunity to show appreciation to public employees at the federal, state, and local levels who ensure that our government is the best in the world.  Public employees in approximately 1500 cities in the U.S. and around the work take part in the annual celebration.  Festivals, open houses, parades, community clean-up days, and fund-raising events to benefit charity are just some of the ways that public employees around the country reach out to their communities.  Public Service Recognition Week also offers us a great opportunity to educate young people about American government.

The Middle Tennessee Federal Executive Association (MTFEA) has an interest in organizing an event during this year’s Public Service Recognition Week which is May 7-11, 2001.  Following are a few ideas for which we seek your opinion as to whether you have an interest in participating.  Please check which activity for which your agency would be willing to participate.   MTFEA also wants to begin now to plan for an exhibition event encompassing federal agencies as well as state and local government agencies during the 2002 Public Service Recognition Week.

2001

____ 1) Exhibit Event to be held in the Estes Kefauver Federal Building and Courthouse from 2PM-5PM Wednesday, May 9, 2001.  Booths representative of the federal community in Middle Tennessee would be available for federal employees and the public to visit.

____ 2) Talent Show with entrants limited to presently employed Federal employees in Middle Tennessee.  Judges would be agency heads and, perhaps, people from the music industry.  If ethics regulations allow, prizes could be donated from the private sector.  This is an event that would need to take place on a Friday evening or during the day Saturday.  It could be structured several ways and would last approximately 2 ˝ hours.

____ 3) After Hours Open House to be held in the Estes Kefauver Federal Building and Courthouse from 5PM-7PM.  Those federal agencies housed in the Building/Courthouse would open their doors for federal employees to visit and learn about the other tenants residing in the building.  For those agencies not located in the Building/Courthouse, the cafeteria and conference rooms would be made available for a table or booth representing those agencies.  Refreshments could be served in the elevator lobbies of each floor.  Visitors to each agency could receive a brief 5-10 minute “talk” on the mission and function of the agency visited.

____ 4) Other Ideas Not Requiring Agency Involvement:

____ Frist Center for the Visual Arts Public Service Recognition Day - Ask the Frist Center to allow Federal employees free admission for a day with agency identification.

____ Public Service Recognition via a discounted ticket and a display of appreciation at a sporting event during Public Service Recognition Week

____ Ask Nashville restaurants to recognize Public Servants with a discounted lunch with agency identification one day during Public Service Recognition Week

2002

____Yes, the (Agency Name)_________________________________________________  will participate

in an exhibition event.  The point of contact for this agency is _________________________________ and

may be reached on _______________________________.

____ No, the (Agency Name) ______________________________________________ will not participate.
