Vice-President’s Column  -  Carol Warren

I just cannot believe another month has gone by.  We certainly had a great October meeting and I would like to thank all who came.  Mr. John Glynn, from the Federal Protection Service, gave a very informative briefing on security of federal buildings since 11 Sep.  Also, the Social Security Office agency profile was very insightful into that agency’s mission and function.  The Combined Federal Campaign has been going very smoothly with a lot of participation from the various agencies.  Rueban Rodriquez said he has been very pleased with the results so far and is hoping to reach the CFC goal.

During our October meeting, the list of nominations of new officers for 2002 was voted on and approved.  We should be very proud of the excellent officers who have been elected, they are:

Rueban Rodriquez, Postal Service  - President

John McCrum, GSA - Vice-President

Melissa Cothron, IRS - Treasurer

Please congratulate our new leaders and give them your full support throughout 2002.  Installations of officers will be at our December meeting.

We are very excited about our November Meeting.  It will be at the Frist Center in one of their meeting rooms, there will be directional signs setup that day.  Anne Henderson, Director of Education, will be our speaker.  Anyone who would like to tour the museum can for the rate of $5.50.  Hope all members can come to this meeting, it will prove to be a most exciting presentation.

I would like to thank everyone for your support to all the 2001 officers.  It has been a real privilege to serve each one of you.  Many thanks to Ed Phillips, our distinguished President; Rebecca, Milton, and Melissa for all that you have done to make my job as the Vice-President most enjoyable.  See you November 13th at the Frist Center!!!

Ed announced the MTFEA’s Leadership Nominating Committee’s nominations.  They were: Ruben Rodriguez for President, John McCrum for Vice President and Melissa Cothron for Treasurer.  Upon no further nominations from the floor, Ruben, John and Melissa will see their terms begin in January 2002.

Lee Ann Bauer’s update on MTFEA’s celebration for Public Service Recognition Week to be held in May 2002 reminded all that the deadline for commitments is this month.  She has received commitments from IRS, US Attorney’s Office, VA, VBA, Corps of Engineers, USDA Rural Housing, Secret Service, INS, HUD and Public Defense.

John Glynn, FPS, once again spoke on security measures emphasizing evacuation procedures and remaining alert to your surroundings.  He also handed out FBI posters outlining what to do if suspicious mail is received.

Ruben Rodriguez reported that Combined Federal Campaign contributions presently total  $491,000.  Ruben is positive that the goal of $1,000,000 will be reached this year.  Ruben emphasized CFC’s development by Federal employees wanting to ensure an outlet to help the community and having the community understand the Federal sector’s contributions.  Important too, Ruben feels, is the CFC’s review of applications for qualified agencies.

Ed Phillips introduced Rodney Taylor, District Manager, Social Security Administration.

Mr. Taylor presented this month’s Agency Profile.  With five offices in his district (15 counties in Middle Tennessee), Mr. Taylor states the mission of Social Security is to promote economic security in the areas of retirement benefits, survivor’s benefits and disability benefits.  With benefits of  $400 billion paid out nationally and $60 million

a month paid out by the Middle Tennessee offices,  Mr. Taylor cites the impact of the Social Security program.  He also reported that the program is not “going anywhere”, having solvency until 2038.  Mr. Taylor introduced his four district office managers.  They are: James Whiteaker, Murfreesboro;  Jerry Brothers, Madison;  Bob Loring, Gallatin and Reta Smith, Clarksville.

The Door Prize drawing was held.  Mildred Taylor held the lucky number 7 that was drawn and received $25.00.

Meeting adjourned at approximately 1:30pm.
