Malaria Vectors in Thailand

malaria & Anopheles mosquitoes

The important Anopheles vector species that transmitted malaria parasite in Thailand are in the Leucosphyrus group, series Neomyzomyia, subgenus Cellia, genus Anopheles (Culicidae) (2). There are at least 65 species of Anopheles in Thailand , but not all of them are recognized as malaria vector (3). An. dirus, An. minimus, An. maculatus, An. aconitus, and An. sundaicus have been proven as vectors of malaria in Thailand. These Anopheles groups being in the area covered with natural forests, and hill of Thai-border countryside. The primary Anopheles species is An. dirus, distantly followed by An. minimus and An. maculatus, which are complexes of closely related species or sibling species (2). In each sibling species they are different in the vectorial capacity.
