Such an intuitive title such as “Adventure #6” is really somewhat pointless as there is yet an adventure, and it is far about the number 6. Nonetheless, that will do for now. I can finally feel the spirit of writing and adventuring stirring in me once again. Perhaps due to other reasons, perhaps due to the tragedy of September 11th, I have found myself most unable to write or listen for the past four months. It is now the twenty-second of December as of this writing. I have written Adventure #5, something to do, though really rather uninspired, as well as the language I have yet to name. I do not know what I should have, so I have decided to make a list, perhaps that can once again aide my growing inspiratory spirit (for I have a great power when it stirs, but it seldom is focused. Right now, it is still weak, but I can feel it returning, though why, I have no clue.) I have today watched the Fellowship of the Ring in a movie theater. Fascinating how at once they could make the first half so badly, yet the second so great. In lieu of the recent Harry Potter, I wonder how many are as easily lost to confuse the two, something unfortunate indeed. I must insist my writing not allow for that. Perhaps though, it will aide me (the first of the Lord of the Rings movies, most definitely not the Harry Potter one or anything to do with that foolishness, it is a sad thing that so many treat magic with so little care and have neither defense nor understanding of the power which they cast about as such a trifle.) Maybe though, my writing can resume. Now, I need the list, so I shall write it. Even now, my dreams are returning, of far away lands and things unseen, of great adventures and prophecies, yes, my spirit is stirring again with adventure, that means writings…though how good they will be… I have always wished to repeat what Tolkien did, yet I always fall shy. My writings are good, but my worlds never reach that something his has. The mystery, perhaps, and the feel of things, echoes from long ago. My worlds lack this, and I don’t understand why. I say repeat, for I have neither the skill, nor the inclination to copy, nor do I wish to write of his world. It is his, now mine, and I refuse to do that for it would be a great disrespect, I feel. If I am every fortunate enough to repeat what he did in a story of my own, I will be happy for then I can go on my own adventure. Speaking of which… Adventures need several things. First, they need a reason. What is it we wish to accomplish? Shall we destroy the embodiment of sin, or the embodiment of Satin/Lucifer, the devil himself? I shy away from the later, for it is only granted to the One Most High, not a band of heroes. But at the same time, we cannot destroy sin, for it also, is granted to the Most High, and, consequently, has already been done. We are to fight against evil, that is no doubt, but against what evil are we to fight? Therein lies my oldest thought. Perhaps someday we will travel to Middle-Earth, but it will not be the same. But I had an idea once, that if there was a world and if divided into fifteen sections, each having an evil, all fifteen evils having to be overthrown then one would be free to see that beyond. Perhaps the ‘mere trifles’ could be of some use, and perhaps the staff, but, alas, have the Valor still care of the world? And that is assuming that the world is the same. I would very much like to write of Tolkien’s world, but it is not my own. I would to go adventuring as his fellowships did so long before, but I cannot, I will not, for I could do his world no justice. Therein I have to make my own yet…no ‘mere trifle’, that is to be sure. I am great with maps, have a true skill for them I do, that is no problem for me to make a world, it is the history, and that is what I believe Tolkien had that I do not. My worlds, though often very much fantastical, usually in the category of science-fiction, have no history, for they are earth at a different stage, in a different age, not worlds of their own. I have made a language now, have I not? So I believe it is time I make a world… 1-11-secret of the forest “Long ago, there was nothing. All was empty, all a void, The Void, all except the Light. The Light is eternal, the Flame with no beginning. Because of the Flame, there was always light, even before there was anything to light. The Flame, the Light, the Heat, all one, yet all separate. Then with words was there something else. The Flame, the Light, and the Heat joined together with one voice and commanded that there be Hoelmn, holy beings. But they were not as men, such as I, nor any men that ever lived, save, perhaps, those at the Dawn. The Hoelmn were servants of the Flame, the Light, and the Heat. With joy they wrought works and praise to those they served. With great thanksgiving there were feasts and dances for the glory and honor of the Flame, the Light, and the Heat. “Still though, there was emptiness, as much as there can be within the presence of the Flame, the Light, and the Heat, called hereafter Hoelfre, the Holy Fire. The Hoelfre, true to namesake, was holy. Within the council of the Hoelfre it was decided that the Hoelfre would, with words, create again. This time, not just a lair or kingdom, and not just Hoelmn, the Hoelfre was going to fill the Void. “With words it was commanded, ‘lum! blk!’ Light and darkness. And there was, from then on, light and darkness, for even in the Void, such things did not exist, it was merely empty, devoid of all, having nothing. ‘isat nin’, this is good. But the Hoelfre was still to finish. The three voiced together with one tongue again: ‘gliel! kewel!’, sun and moon came into being. ‘drip! are! dre!’ Earth, air, and sea. All were created with the powers of the Hoelfre, all at once and all perfect. The Hoelfre still was unfinished, and called out with a unified voice yet again: ‘drekare! arekare! dripkare!’ Water creatures and the fish of the sea, aerial creatures, the birds of the skies, earth creatures, all the creatures that walk the earth, baring the sentient ones. ‘isat nin! isat glenin!’ This is good, this is greatly good. “So happy was the Hoelfre with the good wrought, with the perfection of the work in filling the Void, that the Hoelfre explored that created, knowing already all that was. Truly greatness and perfection never before seen, nor after the ending of the Dawn seen, save in Hoelfre alone. All was right, so it began… “But after a time, Hoelfre saw more that could be done, more perfection to add. The start was the First Ones, the EarlOs. Hoelfre spent much time in crafting the first of the EarlOs, for there was something special in store for them: The EarlOs were to receive the gift of choice, the gift of a free will. Hoelfre worked much on them, not because it took the time, but because it delighted Hoelfre much to create them. The EarlOs were to be special, the crowning achievement of all creation, and so it was. The EarlOs were perfect, the head of all creation and friends of Hoelfre, walking and talking often with Hoelfre, the Father and the Creator, as well as the Hoelmn. For long this lasted, and everything was perfect, but it was not to remain forever. “At one time there were chief among the Hoelmn seven: Hoelare, Lord of the Skies and the Air, Hoeldrip, Lord of the Earth and the Lands, Hoeldre, Lord of the Sea and the Waters, Hoelel, Lord of the Stars, Hoelyj, Lord of Joy, Hoelcret, Lord of Creation, and Hoellapas, Lord of All Places. Of them all, Hoellapas was the greatest, the Chief of the Seven. And though holy he once was, he is the cause of all great perils and evils, the Father of Evil. For long was he one of the Seven, but he became proud. Hoelfre made him the greatest of all save Hoelfre, Hoellapas was lord of all places. For that, his pride grew. He became greatly obsessed with himself and his power, forgetting, nay, loathing both his Creator and the fact he was created. He hid his actions and thoughts from all, however Hoelfre knew. There was a darkness that crossed Hoellapas, and he saw for a moment himself as lord on high, master of all things in Hoelfre’s stead. Hoellapas worked in secret, gaining the trust of his fellows the Hoelmn whom be created (for Hoelfre let all the Seven create servants of their own.) “Hoelyj discovered the treachery of Hoellapas and reveled it to Hoelfre. But Hoelfre was unconcerned. Hoelfre continued to speak with the EarlOs and walk the Planes of creation Hoelfre made. Hoellapas continued to plot unawares. Hoelyj, under command of Hoelfre, spoke no words regarding that which he knew. Slowly, Hoellapas also began to confuse some of the EarlOs, drawing some to his side. Eventually, out of confusion, one of the EarlOs asked Hoelfre why it was Hoellapas wished them to follow him, for they followed Hoelfre as did Hoellapas. It was then Hoelfre returned to PasHoelfre, the Place of Hoelfre. Hoellapas had taken up his servants and ascended LftdripHoelfre, the Mountain of Hoelfre, and walked to Lahpas the Hidden Place. Lahpas was a place only the Seven and Hoelfre were allowed, the personal dwelling of Hoelfre in PasHoelfre. It was here Hoellapas told the others of his plan: to overthrow Hoelfre and rule all. It was on the very steps of the Throne that Hoellapas did this and asked for their aide. “The others of the Seven turned Hoellapas down. Hoelyj, Second of the Seven, drew his staff, Ptreyj, and told Hoellapas that any efforts of his to make true with his plan would fail, and that he for one would always follow Hoelfre. The others of the Seven also agreed. Hoellapas declared them fools, saying that they had signed their own fate. Then the Throne lit with the Fire, the Flame, the Light, and the Heat, Hoelfre was once again upon the Throne. Hoelfre ordered Hoellapas to relent, but Hoellapas ordered his servants to attack the Six, and he ran up the steps to challenge Hoelfre alone. For this Hoelfre threw light upon the Sword of All Places, Glitemalpas it was called, and the blade shattered and flew from Hoellapas’s grasp. Heolfre said one word: ‘Yiv…’ Heollapas then fell and all his servants and those he had drawn from the creations of the other Lords, all of them were cast out of PasHoelfre and the gates sealed forever from them. It was then Heollapas became Glimblkyiv, Master of Darkness and Evil. “The EarlOs confused by Glimblkyiv either joined him, or wondered the Planes, lost. Those still of Hoelfre hid themselves, for Glimblkyiv was wroth at his fall. His new name stung his flesh and he ears, he was Master, yet Darkness and Evil, Lord, yet fallen. And from now on he would know the truth, he was nothing, Hoelfre was everything. The EarlOs all but gone, and those joining with Glimblkyiv, as with his servants, became dark and evil, Yivkare, evil creature. Then it was that Glimblkyiv began to war. creepy4 “Glimblkyiv cared nothing to continue in existence as he was and so decided out of hate to destroy all Hoelfre had made in an attempt to kindle the anger of Hoelfre to destroy him and all Planes, all Creation, something Hoelfre would hate because of love of the Creation. This made Glimblkyiv even more aggressive. But eventually he reached the EarlOs Lahpas, the hiding place of the EarlOs. It was here he met stiff resistance. The EarlOs he had no confusion, they were called Rmsyj, Children of Joy. They were often visited by Hoelyj, even after the fall of Glimblkyiv. He had told them of what happened when they asked, and he used his power to give them joy, that he was lord of, that Ptreyj was made for. They were also powerful, the most ancient and precious of all that was made. battimperative “Driven from their place, the EarlOs had nothing to fear for all they had was taken from them, so they fought against Glimblkyiv. Hoelyj went to the EarlOs Lahpas and found it taken. The forces of Glimblkyiv attacked him and fought long. Hoelyj was one of the Seven, the first of the first, and he overcame and cast down many. Finally, in the evening of the night, Hoelyj had Yivkare around his feet and holding to his arms as Glimblkyiv came to help in his fall. Hoelyj, knowing now the danger upon him, called out to Hoelfre: ‘Hoelfre! Gif y iwent!’ In that moment, a light shone upon the Planes and they were shattered. The power of Hoelfre entered the Planes as it had not for such a long time, and they were overwhelmed. The extremes of Hoelfre’s holiness and purity against the darkness and evil of Glimblkyiv tore the Planes. Hoelfre was done with Glimblkyiv’s treachery for the time. Hoelfre had allowed all his Seven to create, and Hoelfre created of the will of the Flame, the Light, and the Heat, with joy and happiness, but Glimblkyiv ruined it all. Hoelfre shattered the Planes and they were broken and devided settling into two: One called Yivdrip or Eastrom, the Evil Land or Plane of Death, and the other, the world of Eacretm, the Plane of Life. It was in Eacretm that all battles between PasHoelfre and Yivdrip were fought, and was, at one time, a bridge between the two, for the Splintering of the Planes had yet to break all shards from Eacretm to PosHoelfre…shards long remain linking Eacretm and Yivdrip/Eastrom… encourage3 “Hoelfre continued to create, the joy and longing of the Flame, Light, and Heat. Created were many, and last was special. Hoelfre created each differently, and each perfect…but something strange would happen, as soon as Hoelfre placed them into Eacretm, they would become corrupted, all except the EarlOsrms, the Children of the First Ones, they, having been pruned of those evil amongst them, so to speak, were free, no longer yearned for any evil…ever… “Hoelfre created three great races in all. Hoelfre created the dwarfs, masters of rock and earth were they. But they fell into greed, and were corrupted. Hoelfre created the race of mn, humans, man. First a man, then a woman. But easily they fell when tempted by Glimblkyiv with power as likened to Hoelfre. So the only left were the EarlOs and the Hoelmn, but the Hoelmn did not go to Eacretm unless with their Lord, and the Six never traveled Eacretm save Hoelyj, who was lost upon the Shahop, the Shard of Hope, from the time Ea was shattered. “Lost he was, for that shard traveled far, separated from all other shards and Planes. He could watch all, but direct none. For a long time he watched as Shahop drifted, but it was true to its namesake, for in the end, it landed in the waters of Eacretm for a time. During that time, Hoelyj came to the shore of Eacretm. It was here that the Light came to Hoelyj. The Light told him that he was meant to do what he had done, and meant to be what he would become. From that day on, be ceased to be known as Hoelyj, and was henceforth known as Yjhop, joyous hope. The Petryj was also given a new name and a new power. From the Shard of Hope the Light took hope and placed it within Yjhop and the Petyj, afterwards known as Petyjhop, the Staff of Joy and Hope. As a sign of the promise, the Light took the Shard of Hope and broke it in two. Half the Light cast to the sea, and half into the sky where it twinkled as a star, Elhop, the Star of Hope shined from that shard then on. The half cast into the sea would come later as a bridge when the two were joined, a bridge that would…well, I’m getting ahead of myself…Yjhop came once again into the company of the EarlOsrms, his fate, for good or for ill, was bound to theirs… “Ah, it is late, and I am tired (1:20 AM here), so I believe we shall stop. Before you say anything, I will continue as soon as we’ve rested some…and I think I could use a drink, my throat is dry from all this talking…” “So, shall we continue? (1:16PM, 23 of December.) Now, where was I? Ah yes, the Light gave Hoelyj a new name, Yjhop, joyful hope, and a new weapon, turning the Staff of Joy into the Staff of Joy and Hope, Petyjhop. In times like those, there was little joy and less hope for those of Eacretm. So it came to pass that Yjhop stood against Glimblkyiv, and the Children of Hoelfre, the EarlOsrms, the dwarven peoples, and the children of men. So it came that the EarlOsrms were called elves, for that is what they were. No longer the First, but instead the oldest of the young. And there were great wars between Yjhop and Glimblkyiv, both them and their servants. Yjhop would lead into battles, Glimblkyiv would cower behind his minions, for he was deftly afraid of the powers of Yjhop, now twice what they were and more. Yet Glimblkyiv wished to rule all the Planes and take the shards that still lead to PasHoelfre. In the end, Glimblkyiv was forced from Eacretm into the hidden places, but still he yearned for power. From Yivdrip Eastrom he plotted and sent his minions about. But the foreknowledge of Hoelfre persisted again, for the Light was sent to Eacretm. Why this was, no one can know, save Hoelfre and those of the Enlightened, but it was that the Light was to cast light into the dark places and drive Glimblkyiv to war with the Light. But the Light did not fight, only light the world. “And it came to pass that Glimblkyiv felt that the Light without the Flame and the Heat would be easily destroyed, so Glimblkyiv drew the Light by what forces he could contrive to Passtrom, the Place of Death, and cast darkness that had never been seen before nor after upon the face of Eacretm, covering the Light unto squelching the Light. But the Light was not destroyed. While Glimblkyiv held wide the gates of Yivdrip Eastrom, the Light journeyed there, and in the darkness grew bright. In this the bonds of Yivdrip Eastrom broke, and all the bonds between Eacretm and PasHoelfre were shattered. Great sadness there was, for now it was certain that neither could any go from Eacretm to PasHoelfre, nor from PasHoelfre to Eacretm. Yet the Light of Eacretm did not fade. Neigh, the Light returned out of Yivdrip Eastrom and out of the sea rose again Shahop, the Shard of Hope. The light from Elhop did shine brightly upon the sea, and so Shahop was joined with it as the Light has said before. And the Light was in Eacretm. And the Light was given a second name, Hoelmagi, the Lord of Love, the Lord of Mercy, the Lord of Heart, the greatest of all powers. And it was sang from upon high by the Children of Men, and of Dwarves, and of Elves, and the Hoelmn, the Light is great for the Light went into the darkness and broke the shards of dispair and revived the Shard of Hope for a bridge across the sea that the Holy would follow. And there was great rejoicing, and the Light was proclaimed at once Hoelfre and at once Hoelmage. At once the part the Light of Hoelfre, and at the same time, the Lord of the Seven, the Master of the Greatest Power. And the Light came to Yjhop, and named him Hoelyjhop, the Lord of Joyful Hope, and the two first traveled the Bridge, and it was good. And they returned to the Court of Hoelfre in PasHoelfre. “And those in Eacretm were happy and content for long time, and once again Hoelfre journeyed within Eacretm, but always in secret, only watching for much, but seldom acting. And there was peace. Glimblkyiv was within Yivdrip Eastrom, and he sent on occasion his servants into Eacretm. Hoelfre did not interfere with them, for the Cares of Hoelfre were much, and the Wisdom of Hoelfre greater then all and seeing all ends. The Bridge was now open, but hidden to many, and over time, as Hoelfre hid greater in journeying Eacretm, it was forgotten by many. But Hoelfre always watched, and the Seven also, for there was always the Wisdom of Hoelfre at work still, even yet now. And so it was that over time, Men and Dwarves and even some Elves forgot, yet not all. The Bridge still lies hidden in the sea, but few may know it, and only in death is it now found. Yet always does Glimblkyiv battle for Eacretm, though the Bridge is not for him or the Yivkare, for they were once in PasHoelfre but betrayed Hoelfre, so they are cast out forever and the Gates of PasHoelfre locked to them. So it was that the Ages past were, the First Age of Eacretm and the time of Ea ended. Long have the Yivkare been sent into Eacretm, but Glimblkyiv fears set foot upon the shore, for the Wrath of Hoelfre is hot against him. Even now, the greatest of the Yivkare, GliYivkare, fear to come out from the Deep Places. So it is that only the smallest of the Yivkare wander, it is they, under orders of their Master, who age the world, and it is they that are within it. Yet the Prophecy of the Light to Hoelyjhop was greater still, though now all but lost to the Ages, the wise still know of it as in a mist or a dream. It spoke of many things that have yet to happen, but some that are happening now, for few of the EarlOsrms still live in Eacretm. They alone are granted use of the Bridge in life save a few allowed others. The Elves. For they are immortal and die not save in battle with the enemy, therein many of them left the circle of the world long ago, when the Bridge was clear to see. Now few remain, but such is the way of things. And the Dwarves are few as well, for they have fought many battles against the servants of Glimblkyiv, so they are few in number, and grow far from the cares of Eacretm, likewise the EarlOsrms. “Yet still there is time for one final due to be done, the final curtain has yet to fall upon the world of Eacretm. Even now there is talk of the New World of Hoelfre, yet it has not come yet for Eacretm shall be no more first. So it is that we must destroy that which has been found, one of many, but the one that must be for the mission of Glimblkyiv, the Doom of Eacretm. Understand now that there were many shards other then Shahop that have come into Eacretm. Glimblkyiv is to gather them together and use all his power to create a bridge to Eacretm that his hordes can travel, for now they are limited in number and searching for the Shards of Ea that have fallen to Eacretm. His one goal is to gain Eacretm and join it with Yivdrip Eastrom that he may have all and entice Hoelfre to destroy all, or sit in agony and pain at the sight. But Hoelfre is wise, and the future only in the hands of Hoelfre. Yet the time is now, for you have found that which is needed most by the enemy, and that which we cannot allow him possession of.” “So what can we do with it?” “If we cast it into the Sea it will be found. The Bridge will not allow it. And we can do nothing with it here.” “So again, what can we do with it?” “The Shadom is the greatest of the shards in power, but it can be done nothing with. There are many shards, and many have forces of good scattered across Eacretm, but this alone the Enemy needs, therefore he cannot have it.” “So I as again, what can we do with it?” “…” The Shards of Ea: Shadom I have aged so much in the last few years, already I feel old at only nineteen…perhaps it is just because of the time, 1:00 AM, but I sometimes feel tired, weary…of this life or of this world, I do not know which, but I am bound to both until such time as YHWY is prepared for me to leave. The adventures I go on to there and from there are where I draw my track, from YHWY I draw my life. There is my refreshment, and that is where I believe I will go to repulse this weariness, for I am immortal, my soul will always remain at the side of my father and king. For that, I will not be weary. I love life and enjoy having fun in all, so I shall do, and be here as long as the will of YHWY demands…never shall I leave until the time is right, for I may tire, but I will never grow bored… ; ) The Language of ________ Version 0.004 Nouns (aren’t many in my language…least not yet…): (--) el star/shining (Another variant is Ar, pronounced like the blend ar in star, more meaning shining) strgl war mn human (if it ends with an e, ‘mne’ it means men, with an i ‘mni’ it means women) crp beast kare creature dre sea/water drip land/earth are sky/air meh market gliel sun (literally great star), also sroel, glilum, and srolum kewel moon (literally weak star), also lisimel, lisimlum, and kewlum fos force (forces) pas place(s)/location(s) blko shadow (literally dark one) iwent victory (literally win/triumph –ness) Hoelmn Angles (more or less, literally holy-human) fre fire isat an object, this/that arekare bird (literally sky/air creature) dripkare general term for any non-human land creature drekare fish (literally sea/water creature) o one (‘O’ being One, with os and Os being ones and Ones, respectively) la all/everything mr parent, as with mn, adding an ending of e or i makes it father/mother, respectively rm child (again, rme is son, rmi daughter and rms is children) cretm life strom death lftdrip mountain (literally lifted or raised land/earth) tre tree pt part ptre stick/staff mo blade (glitem, literally great blade, is usually used for sword, though moh is also used) glim Master or Lord Yivkare Demons (literally evil creatures) y me or I ea plane (with Ea referring to the Planes, the original world created by Hoelfre, and the Eacretm. And he spoke to them, propounding to them themes of music; and they sang before him, and he was glad. But for a long while they sang only each alone, or but few together, while the rest hearkened; for each comprehended only that part of the mind of Illúvatar from which he came, and in the understanding of their brethren they grew but slowly. Yet ever as they listened they came to deeper understanding, and increased in unison and harmony. And it came to pass that Illúvatar called together all the Ainur and declared to them a mighty theme, unfolding to them things greater and more wonderful that he had yet revealed; and they glory of its beginning and the splendour of its end amazed the Ainur, so that they bowed before Illúvatar and were silent. Then Illúvatar said to them: ‘Of the theme that I have declared to you, I will now that ye make in harmony together a Great Music. And since I have kindled you with the Flame Imperishable, ye shall show forth your powers in adorning this theme, each with his own thoughts and devices, if he will. But I will sit and hearken, and be glad that through you great beauty has been wakened into song.’ Then the voices of the Ainur, like unto harps and lutes, and pipes and trumpets, and viols and organs, and like unto countless choirs singing with words, began to fashion the theme of Illúvatar to a great music; and a sound arose of endless interchanging melodies woven in a harmony that passed beyond hearing into the depths and into the heights, and the places of the dwelling of Illúvatar were filled to overflowing, and the music and the echo of the music went out into the Void, and it was not void. Never since have the Ainur made any music like to this music, though it has been said that a greater still shall be made before Illúvatar by the choirs of the Ainur and the Children of Illúvatar after the end of days. Then the themes of Illúvatar shall be played aright, and take Being in the moment of their utterance, for all shall then understand fully his intent in their part, and each shall know the comprehension of each, and Illúvatar shall give to their thoughts the secret fire, being well pleased. But now Illúvatar sat and hearkened, and for a great while it seemed good to him, for in the music there were no flaws. But as the theme progressed, it came into the heart of Melkor to interweave matters of his own imagining that were not in accord with the theme of Illúvatar; for he sought therein to increase the power and glory of the part assigned to himself. To Melkor among the Ainur had been given the greatest gifts of his brethren. He had gone often alone into the void places seeking the Imperishable Flame; for desire grew hot within him to bring into Being things of his own and it seemed to him that Illúvatar took no thought for the Void, and he was impatient of its emptiness. Yet he found not the Fire, for it is with Illúvatar. But being alone he had begun to conceive thoughts of his own unlike those of his brethren. Some of these thoughts he now wove into his music, and straightaway discord arose about him, and many that sang nigh him grew despondent, and their thought was disturbed and their music faltered; but some began to attune their music to his rather than to the thought which they had at first. Then the discord of Melkor spread ever wider, and the melodies which had been heard before foundered in a sea of turbulent sound. But Illúvatar sat and hearkened until it seemed that about his throne there was a raging storm, as of dark waters that made war one upon another in an endless wrath that would not be assuaged. Then Illúvatar arose, and the Ainur perceived that he smiled; and he lifted up his left hand, and anew theme began amid the storm, like and yet unlike to the former theme, and it gathered power and had new beauty. But the discord of Melkor rose in uproar and contended with it, and again there was a war of sound more violent that before, until many of the Ainur were dismayed and sang no longer, and Melkor had the mastery. Then again Illúvatar arose, and the Ainur perceived that his countenance was stern; and he lifted up his right hand, and behold! A third theme grew amid the confusion, and it was unlike the others. For it seemed at first soft and sweet, a mere rippling of gentle sounds in delicate melodies; but it could not be quenched, and it took to itself power and profundity. And it seemed at last that there was two musics progressing at one time before the seat of Illúvatar, and they were utterly at variance. The one was deep and wide and beautiful but slow and blended with an immeasurable sorrow, from which its beauty chiefly came. The other had now achieved a unity of its own; but it was loud, and vain, and endlessly repeated; and it had little harmony, but rather a clamorous unison as of many trumpets braying upon a few notes. And it was essayed to drown the other music by the violence of its voice, but it seemed that its most triumphant notes were taken by the other and woven into its own solemn pattern. In the midst of this strife, where as the halls of Illúvatar shook and a tremor ran out into the silences yet unmoved, Illúvatar arose a third time, and his face was terrible to behold. Then he raised up both his hands, and in one chord, deeper than the Abyss, higher than the Firmament, piercing as light of the eye of Illúvatar, the Music ceased. Then Illúvatar spoke, and he said: ‘Mighty are the Ainur, and mightiest among them is Melkor; but that he may know, and all the Ainur, that I am Illúvatar, those things that ye have sung, I will show them forth, that ye may see what ye have done. And thou, Melkor, shalt see that no theme may be played that hath not its uttermost source in me, nor can any alter the music in my despite. For he that attempteth this shall prove but mine instrument in the devising of things more wonderful, which he himself hath not imagined.’ Then the Ainur were afraid, and they did not yet comprehend the words that were said to them; and Melkor was filled with shame, of which came secret anger. But Illúvatar arose in splendour, and he went forth from the fair regions that he had made for the Ainur; and the Ainur followed him. But when they were come into the Void, Illúvatar said to them: ‘Behold your Music!’ And he showed to them a vision, giving to them sight where before was only hearing; and they say a new World made visible before them, and it was globed amid the Void, and it was sustained therein, but was not of it. And as they looked and wondered this World began to unfold its history, and it seemed to them that it lived and grew. And when the Ainur had gazed for a while and were silent, Illúvatar said again: ‘Behold your Music! This is your minstrelsy; and each of you shall find contained therein, amid the design that I set before you, all those things which it may seem that he himself devised or added. And thou, Melkor, wilt discover all the secret thoughts of thy mind, and wilt perceive that they are but a part of the whole and tributary to its glory.’ " The continuation of Ainulindalë: "…And many other things Illúvatar spoke to the Ainur at that time, and because of their memory of his words, and the knowledge that each has of the music that he himself made, the Ainur know much of what was, and is, and is to come, and few things are unseen by them. Yet some things there are that they cannot see, neither along nor taking counsel together; for to none but himself has Illúvatar revealed all that he has in store, and in ever age there come forth things that are new and have no foretelling, for they do not proceed from the past. And so it was that as this vision of the World was played before them, the Ainur saw that it contained things which they had not thought. And they saw with amazement the coming of the children of Illúvatar, and the habitations that was prepared for them; and they perceived that themselves in the labour of their music had been busy with the preparation of this dwelling, and yet knew not that it had any purpose beyond its own beauty. For the Children of Illúvatar were conceived by him alone; and they came with the third theme, and were not the theme which Illúvatar propounded at the beginning, and none of the Ainur had part in their making. Therefore when they beheld them, the more did they love them, being things other than themselves, strange and free, wherein they saw the mind of Illúvatar reflected anew, and learned yet a little more of his wisdom, which otherwise had been hidden even from the Ainur. Now the Children of Illúvatar are Elves and Men, the Firstborn and the Followers. And amid all the splendours of the World, its vast halls and spaces, and its wheeling fires, Illúvatar chose a place for their habitation in the Deeps of Time and in the midst of the innumerable stars. And this habitation might seem a little thing to those who consider only the majesty of the Ainur, and not their terrible sharpness; as who should take the whole field of Arda for the foundation of a pillar so raise it until the cone of its summit were more bitter than a needle; or who consider only the immeasurable vastness of the World, which still the Ainur are shaping, and not the minute precision to which they shape all things therein.
