AM types have a ballance of armor, speed, and weapon options. Although not amazing in any area, they can dodge a fair amount and take a fair beating from whatever does hit them, as well as fire back with their payloads. AMs are usually fairly cheap and widly available, and parts for them are also fairly easily available.
AM -008
Probably the oldest mecha still in common use, the AM -008 was a marval of its time. Having good maneuverability and armor raitings, the AM -008 has stood the test of time. Properly modified, they can still stand up against many more modern suits, and are still in wide use across all known territories. AM -008s were so popular, a presurization and transformation module were created uniquely for them (which some more modern suits are compatible with.)
AM -011
An outdated mech, AM -011 are fairly well armored and have a wide array of equipment options. They are still in use in more remote territories, and with proper equipment, tactics, and numbers, can actually pose a significant threat. The AM -011 was also said to be the favored mech of a certain famous mecha engineer, although the reason is somewhat unknown. They are prone to some mechanical anomalies however.
AM -015 (See LM -007)
AM -017
A newer AM unit, the AM -017s are capable of hoisting some heavy mecha components. It is a good ballance of speed, armor, and weapon options, and is in common use anywhere where recient mecha are available. The AM-017 has a standard pressurized cockpit.
AM -025
The most recient of the AM line of mecha, the AM -025 is a powerful suite with many weapon options, a pressurized cockpit standard, and can carry a variety of weapon components. It is quite possibly the most ballanced suit in existance, though it's prohibitive cost means it's only employed by the most modern of militaries and special force units.
LM suits are designed for speed...at the sacrifice of armor and weapon capacity. Although some of the newer ones have several armor options and a good sellection of weapons, LMs are still more limited than other types. Although they can't take many hits, a skilled pilot doesn't take many. They are very useful for scout craft and they also have the easiest time escaping from battles if need be.
LM -007 (Formerly AM -015)
An older light mech, once classified as an armored mech, it is still largely in use. The LM -007 is a varient of the AM -10x line of mecha and can use all AM -10x parts (including LM 005 - 008 sets). It is largly in use by raiders and private militia due to it's cheap replacements and the ease of finding parts for it.
LM -011
Still in use by many military scout divisions, the LM -011 light armor is light, fast, and can carry an impressive array of weapons for a light armor suit. It also boasts a pressurized cockpit standard and an improved targeting system over earlier LM models.
LM -015
A state of the art light armor suit fitted with the latest in maneuvering technology, the LM -015 can carry any light armor parts as well as several armored parts and a sellect few heavy armor componenets. Additionally, the LM -015 can be outfitted with a transforming module similar to the TM -004, enabling substantial performance even in space. As a cutting edge suit, it is really only seen in the service of special force units, although a few wealthy individuals have a handful in their private forces.
HM suits can take the most hits, although due to their slower maneuvering ability, they do often take many. Still, they can also dish out tremendous damage with their extensive paload options and capacity, and with additional armor plating available, they can become take more hits than some capital ships, and some can also dish out more damage too.
HM -004
A recient suit, the HM -004 can carry pretty much all non class/unit specific equipment. It's slow, bulky, and heavy, but can take a heck of a beating and dish out one in return. It does have a pressurized cockpit standard.
HM -007
A new heavy suit, the HM -007 is actually somewhat maneuverable for a heavy suit, and can take more punishment than any other widly available suit. With a pressurized cockpit, it can traverse space and seas, though it's an even easier target in water.
HM -010
The newest heavy suit out there, it is expensive, and the tank of tanks. It actually is fairly light on its feet for a heavy armor, and can take more hits than any other suit out there, especially once fully armored. The HM -010 is pressurized and can function in any environment normally encountered save solar surfaces, although it can withstand outter and even some mid levels of solar atmospheres.
TM mecha have the ability to transform into a alternate weapon platform (fighter, bomber, sub.fighter). To do so, they give up some weapon options of their respective class, but they also gain some unique abilities. Transformed suits can easily escape from battles, disengage and engage enemies, and have bonus attack abilities due to these capabilities. They can also fight as mecha and in their transformed state have better capacities than regular suits modified to transform.
TM -001
This is a light mecha that can transform into something akin to a jet. Able to function in space, the pressurized cockpit potentially allows underwater usage as well, althought the transformation doesn't work underwater. The armament it can carry is limited, but the transformation allows travel at higher speeds and use of light aircraft weaponry.
TM -002
A moderately armored mecha that can transform into a jet, it has limited range, but can function well in space and take some hits before going down as well. It has a moderate catalogue of available weapons and armament.
TM -003
A fairly standard AM with the capacity to transform into a water craft. As an AM, it's pretty average, but nothing can match it's transformed state underwater. Although it has mediocre weapon options at best, it is the only suit that can employ many underwater specific weapons.
TM -004
A newer light armor TM, this suit transforms into a sleak fighter that can funciton in most any environment and can employ many weapons for a light armor platform.
TM -005
A heavy armor TM, this suit can transform into a bomber-like fighter. It can carry several weapons unique to this armor class and many heavy armor suits as well as additional plating.
EX suits are generally one of a kind. As such, they aren't widly available and belong only to the individual that pilots them (or the employer of said pilot.) As unique mecha, they often have weapons built specifically for them which few (if any) other mecha can employ. However, being experimental, they usually have their own quirks that their pilots have to contend with.
