** CAMPUS CALENDAR ** There are many events throughout the course of the year that you should not compete with in terms of programming. For starters, it is always good to check out the university calendar on Miami’s website to see if there are any big lectures, concerts or other large events. Second, here are a few other events that may or may not be on the calendar, but as a fellow you should definitely be aware of! In some instance, you might want to schedule a program around these events. For example, on Green Beer Day, we had a UJC fundraiser selling green baked goods. It’s all up to you, though!
Dance Marathon: usually the first Saturday of March, many organizations participate and Hillel has had their own team in the past. Green Beer Day: The Thursday or so before Spring Break. People start drinking green beer around 6 am or something crazy like that. People start going back to classes around noon-2 pm, then start up the festivities again at night. Spring Break: usually the second or third week of March. Ghetto Fest: I hate this term, but as un-PC as it is, it’s when lots of people who live in areas in North Oxford open up their apartments/houses for parties. This happens the second or third weekend of April. Red Brick Rasta: this is when uptown High Street is closed off, typically the Friday of finals, the day before graduation. Bands play on High Street, and all of the restaurants and bars are hopping. Also, please keep in mind these other events: Concerts: ask around, keep your ears open Fraternity meetings: Sunday nights Sorority meetings: Wednesday nights Greek formals: some in fall, some in Spring, keep your ears open or ask.
Monday/Tuesday Switch Day: usually the day after Labor Day, its when the academic scheduling for a Monday is followed on a Tuesday. Homecoming: usually the second weekend of October, lots of alumni come back. Fall Break: usually the third weekend of October, students get Friday off and normally Hillel sponsors a Fall Break trip. Parent’s Weekend: usually the first weekend of November, parents come around, so clean your room! Thanksgiving Break: officially starts at 10 pm the Tuesday prior to Thanksgiving, however a lot of students leave earlier, so it might be a good idea not to plan any programs that week. Fraternity/Sorority Rush: Sorority rush begins the first week of classes second semester and fraternity rush begins shortly thereafter. Consult with members of fraternities and sororities and get their advice about programming during rush.
