Aaron, Brian, Leslie, and Jen in front of Hillel Beerman Center
In our 2002-2003 year, Miami Hillel had a fully-loaded staff! However, not only will there be no JCSC Fellow next year, but several of us will no longer be working for Miami’s Hillel, so the staff structure will definitely change a bit. Read on about who was in charge this year. Brian, Director: Brian is the Executive Director and my coach/supervisor. He is a very understanding and flexible supervisor. He is always willing to help you out with anything that you need. Caring about your personal life as well, Brian gets concerned when you work too hard, or when you are stressed, so he is very flexible
with your work schedule and is very understanding that you must have a life outside of Hillel.
Leslie, Administrator: This year Leslie was the administrator, but left during the second semester to move to DC. She will also not be at Hillel next year. I’m not sure what Leslie did, but I know she was always hard at work, and only once in a while did I talk with her, or maybe hear her yelling at her computer! Leslie dealt a lot with reserving rooms on campus, making flyers, writing appeal letters to the community, alumni, and parents, and other administrative stuff such as time sheets, etc.
Aaron, Jewish Student Life Coordinator: Aaron is the JSLC (Program Director) this year, but will not be returning next year. This year I shared an office with Aaron and talked with him about stuff literally every day. A hefty conversation is necessary at the beginning of the year about who is responsible for helping the student board members, and who is not. This year, I was responsible for the student board members that had positions directly related to my target groups and Aaron oversaw the rest of the student board members. The infamous, amazing "BERNAY" has been vital to most of the programming
at Hillel, including Casino night, the Toronto trip, the semi-formal, and after a semester of planning and fundraising, even survived the disappointment of Steve Emerson cancelling an Israel Week lecture! Aaron, thanks for a great year together! You turned workdays into playdays!
Jen, Jewish Campus Service Corps Fellow: That’s me! This year, I was responsible for programming for first year students, women students, Greek-Jewish students, and Tzedek students. Target populations may differ from year to year. Basically, I am responsible for engaging Jewish students who don’t already come to Hillel by meeting them where they are at, and building relationships with them and other students at Miami. I also plan programs in the res. halls, table on campus, and generally just hang out with students. It’s fun!

Paula, Jack-of-All-Trades: Paula is our wonderful cook, cleaning person, mass-mailing queen and much more! She is absolutely wonderful, will help whenever she can and will be working for Hillel next year.

Cooking all of our Shabbat dinners, she is a wonderful resource, so, if given enough time, she also loves helping prepare food for a program, even if it is outside of the building. Paula is not Jewish, but is familiar with laws of kashrut and helps to keep a kosher kitchen. Paula does not have an office, but most likely you can find her in the kitchen, therefore, you’ll need to use our state-of-art intercom system to notify her when someone calls for her…. “Paaaaaaullllllllaaaaaa.”
Melvin, Maintenance: Melvin is our facilities man, an all around nice man too! Melvin is Paula’s father (just in case you hear her refer to "Pop"), and loves to work very early in the morning, so most of the time, I don’t see him by the time I get to work! Melvin was single-handedly responsible for the building of the computer room, and numerous shelves around the office. Melvin will be back next year.
Stephen, Database Guy: Stephen is a first year student who was hired part-time this year to continuously update our database. He does such a great job, but once in a while encourage him that he’s doing a great job-cuz sometimes its not so exciting being stuck in an office with a bunch of “adults” (although some would tend to disagree!) I believe Stephen will be returning next year.
