Researchers say pupils would get better results if schools were decorated with potted plants. They say the plants would reduce the levels of carbon dioxide in overcrowded classrooms. The gas lowers pupils' ability to concentrate but plants convert it to oxygen. Studies into so-called sick classroom syndrome found child concentration levels drop whenever carbon dioxide increases to more than 1,000 parts per million. In some classes levels can exceed this by 500%. Yuccas and spider plants are among those being recommended for use. The study was carried out by Derek Clements-Croome, of Reading University, according to The Times. Story filed: 07:26 Thursday 11th July 2002 |
