Backup Board Basics
When people first see the MGD2 backup board, they are usually a little surprised. This piece of hardware looks very simplistic and primitive, yet unlike any other device made, it has the capability of backing up games for five different systems. The backup board measures roughly 4" x 7" and is composed of a printed circuit board (PCB) with four main integrated circuit processor chips and a handful of other electronic components. When the boards were manufactured, they came pre-drilled with special holes which would accept cartridge ports for various game systems. The customer would request which slots he or she would like to have installed, and the retailer would solder in the appropriate connectors. The basic board typically had at least the Super Famicom, Mega Drive, and PC Engine ports. Gameboy and Game Gear ports were also available, but the demand was not quite as high for these particular systems. Due to the fragile nature of these boards, not many are left in existance. To come by one is rare, and in many cases, damn lucky. A special program is required to use the backup board with the MGD2. For detailed instructions on how to use the board, please click here.
