Humming a song in her mind, she walked down the hallway with open mind and heart. The fear within of the unknown was blocked away by the only happiness she wished for. Evy didn't know how to think. Her heart was ripped out in front of her when the love of her life was slain before eyes. Only in a dream, she assured herself. The anguish that Rick must have gone through the day she died was nothing she knew she could bare herself. She continued to hum the song happily, walking to where her mind let her walk to. When her mind finally came back into play, she found herself not at home, but in the library. She found herself searching through the books. It was unknown to her what she was looking for, but the assurance was with her that she will find it.

"Evy, hunny. I think it's time to come home now." Rick's deep voice echoed through her mind. She didn't know if it was real or not. The dream the night before seemed so clear. Reality has not been set yet. "You can check out that book if you want. Let's just read it when we get home. Come on let's go." Everything was a blur. The words on the pages appeared magically in front of her as if they had been there the whole time. She knew not what she was reading, but nodded to checking it out. Her footsteps again carried her to her destination. A home, as she once called it. With a book in her hand, she walked steadily upstairs trying to find the conscience that she had lost.

"Mom." A new echo boomed in her head. It was Alex who needed her attention this time. She saw not of his face, but heard his voice plane and clear. The blur continued to cloud her vision. "Good night." He called to her. She felt herself call back to him, but heard not of her own voice. The comfortable bed was the only thing on her mind right now. To lay there next to her husband. That night the dream came back to her. Rick was now joined by Alex who decided to step into the ultimate fate. She could not tell how they perished, but felt their warm blood on her hands. She felt her warm tears stream down her cheeks. It was once again reality in a dream-like world.

"Evy are you alright?" A man's voice woke her from her nightmare.

She stared at him for a moment trying to decipher his identity. His appearance seemed strange to her. She did not know what to call him, but felt he was strong and kind. "Yes I am fine." She was pleased to finally hear herself speak. It dawned on her that this man sounded worried and sad. "Why do you ask?" She wanted to know. She looked about her and realized she wasn't in her bedroom. Some strange place. But she didn't have the will to care.

Ardeth looked at her for a moment. His worriment seemed to grow. The lining of his eyes were wetting. The absence of life was in his face. He was pale. Pale and exaughsted. "You've been asleep for some time now." His eyebrows rose with his words.

"Asleep? That's strange. Sir, do you know where I am?" The thought finally ate at her brain.

"Evy?" He rushed by her side. He took her hand. "Evy there was an accident. Do you remember?" His hands were warm and she could feel his whole body shake. "Please. Answer
me."

"What accident?" She thought the whole thing was absurd. The absence of any knowledge grew no tingle in her heart. "Who are you?"

He unhooked her grasp and walked slowly back from her. He spoke aloud to somebody outside the door. "I think she has lost her memory." A man in a white apron entered the room. "She does not know who I am." He told him.

The white apronned man approached her bed. "At least she is awake." He sighed. He turned his head toward Evy. "Do you know who you are?" He seemed sympathetic, but annoyed by the situation.

Evy laid there for a moment and thought back. Fire was the only thing she could recollect. She shook her head. "No... No I do not. I'm sorry."

The two stared at her in disbelief. "When will her memory return?" Evy saw Ardeth slumped against the wall. His head was open to the sky and tears were filling his eyes and streaming down his face.

"That is uncertain. Sometimes these experiences can shut off the minds reception to the past. She didn't want to remember, because of all the pain it would cause."

She watched the two men speak for a while. She didn't want to listen to what they had to say. She was stuck in her own realm of consciousness. Somehow, she felt she was happy and content. She didn't want to leave. "Evelyn...." An echo sounded in her mind. "Evelyn look at me." In the corner of the room stood a handsome man with great love and affection in his eyes.

"Rick!" was her first reflex to say. She lifted her head quickly, and almost made herself jump out of bed, but the wires she found attached to her stopped her from going anywhere.

"Evy!" Ardeth ran to her side. "What's the matter? Are you alright?" A million thoughts were roaming through his head about her sudden impulse to get up. Had her memories returned? Why did she call for Rick?

"Yes sir. I'm fine." She scoffed and laid back down. The man in the corner found a chair to sit comfortably in and sat there watching her. He made her feel peaceful. She knew everything was alright now.

"Evelyn, how about we cut back on the 'sir's. You make me feel too formal. My name is
Ardeth Bay. Call me Ardeth. You might not know this, but we've been friends for twelve years." He tried to sound as happy as possible.

Evy picked up on this, and now figured how serious the situation must be. "Ardeth, how did I get here?" He stared at her blankly trying to think of a good explanation. "Please, whatever it is, it won't hurt me. I don't even know who I am. How hurt can I be?"

Ardeth smiled at her good attitude. He took her hand in his two and started speaking. Evy watched his mouth move, but couldn't hear words coming out. She just heard herself humming again. She closed her eyes to focus on the song, and then found herself walking the hallway once again. She felt depressed, but she didn't know why. Her heart ached with every note she hummed and every step she took. "What's happening to me?" She thought. "This can't be happening." She longed for pleasant silence, but still found herself humming. "It was only a dream." She heard herself think. Flashbacks of more fire raced through her mind. "NO!!!" She screamed out loud. She didn't know why she was doing these things. Or seeing these things.

"Mom! What's going on?" She opened her eyes. She was at the top of her stairs. Alex was peering up to her from the bottom. She stared at him. Wondering how he got there. Wondering how she got there. She studied every feature on that boys face. "Come-on mom. You're scaring me. Quick looking at me like that." Everything around him was a blur.

"I'm sorry." She was blank. Exaughstion filled her heart. She turned back around and ran to her bedroom. It was all instinct. She had never seen this place before, but felt that it gave her peace of mind. It had to be her home. She sat down on her bed and saw that she was carrying a book. She opened it up to read.

"Evelyn?" Ardeth's voice echoed in her ears. She looked up from her book and found herself staring at the end of a bed. "Evelyn?" Ardeth's voice startled her. She didn't expect him to be sitting right next to her. When he finally saw her eyes, he made the attempt to speak to her again. "You went off into space." He laughed. He was relieved that she didn't hear what he said.

Evelyn looked at him suspiciously. "Who are you?" She was jittery. "Where am I? Where's Jonathon?"

Ardeth closed his eyes trying to hold back the tears. Evy's behavior frightened him. "I can bring in Jonathon if you like. I think he's out in the waiting room." He got up quickly and exited the room.

Evelyn laid there frightened. The tears were streaming down her pale face. She studied her surroundings until she found a mirror laying on a nightstand next to her bed. She picked it up and looked into it. Her appearance made her jump back and throw it down. How old she looked. She expected to see a fourteen year old girl. Not a forty year old woman. She picked up the mirror again. She slowly looked into it. This time she saw too faces. Someone was resting their chin on her shoulder. To her surprise this didn't startle her. She looked next to her and there was Rick's face.

"You look beautiful. You don't need all that goop." He said to her. She turned back around and found herself standing in front of a dresser mirror with make-up laid in front of her. She just smiled at his comment. The pain was still in her heart. "Listen." He became serious. "We don't have to stay for very long." Evelyn looked down and discovered she was wearing a black dress. She looked at the dresser and felt that it didn't belong to her. She looked around the room and saw that it was small and cozy with two beds. Panic grew in her when she couldn't figure out where she was. "Hunny. You're scaring
me."

"Who are you?" She jumped away from him. She felt someone grab her hand. She looked beside her and there was Jonathon. She looked back for Rick, but found herself back in the hospital room.

"Evy?" Jonathon sounded like he was about to cry. She watched as his forehead grew wrinkles. "Ardeth said you were awake, but I didn't believe it. He told me you called for
me."

"What?" Evy was confused. "What's going on?" Now she was frustrated. She knew where she was and who Jonathon was, but couldn't remember his name or how she even knew him. She didn't even know how she ended up in the hospital, but knew she was supposed to be there.

Jonathon didn't know how to respond.

"This is going to sound kind of strange. And it's very embarrassing. But I can't remember you're name." She laughed at herself. She saw Jonathon's eyes widen and then grow blank.

"um Jonathon." He mumbled.

"Don't take it personally." The doctor was standing in the doorway with Ardeth. "She has a form of amnesia."

"What?" Jonathon grabbed his head. "It is going to last long?"

"It's really too early to tell." He shrugged his shoulders. "I'll leave you all alone." He exited the room leaving Ardeth and Jonathon with Evy.

"How are you feeling?" Jonathon turned to Evy. He tried to hide his anxieties. He was waiting for an answer when he noticed that she was staring off into space. He looked to Ardeth for answers.

Ardeth slowly shrugged his shoulders and shook his head. "She keeps on doing that."

"NO!!!" Evy screamed out. Jonathon had to hold her down in her bed.

The doctor came running in. "What happened?"

"I dunno I dunno she just belted out like that!" Jonathon was terrified.

The doctor relaxed his form. He saw that Evy was back to normal again. "Frequent outbursts are normal. Don't let them alarm you."

"No of course not doctor. My sister screams out in mental pain, and we won't let it alarm us at all." Jonathon snapped.

"Jonathon.." Ardeth butted in. "Please just listen to him. He knows what he's doing."

Jonathon scoffed. "I'm sorry." He spoke sincerely. "It's just--"

The doctor held up his hand for Jonathon to stop talking. "It's okay." He walked out of the room.

Evy was watching all this not from her bed but from the corner of the room. She saw herself sitting there eyes wide open. Rick was kneeling by her bed on the opposite side of Ardeth and Jonathon. He was holding her hand crying. "Rick." She called to him. He looked up spotted Evy behind him. He looked back to the Evy in the bed and the Evy in the corner of the room. He got up from his kneeling and slowly walked to her. "Hi." She smiled. He embraced her tightly and held her up in the air swinging her around. He kissed her passionately. "What's going on?" He just shook his head no. "Rick please speak to me. You're frightening
me."

"I have to show you something." He said. He held out his hand for her to take. As soon as their hands locked, the hospital room was transformed into a wedding chapel.

"That's us!" She pointed to the bride and groom at the alter.

"Yes.. yes it is."

"Why am I here?" She continued to study their old selves. She saw how nervous and happy she was.

"Not right now. We have to take you back."

"Will I be able to remember?" Rick shook his head no. "Will I ever remember again?"

"That's for you to decide." He covered her eyes with his hand. "Somewhere over the rainbow..." He started to sing. "Close your eyes." He whispered. He took off his and saw that her eyes were closed. He kissed her. When she opened them, she was back in the hospital bed.

"Way up high." She finished the phrase. She didn't know why. She looked beside her. Who are these strange men? One of them lifted his head from his arm to look at her.

"Evy?" Jonathon squeaked.

"Where'd he go?" She asked them.

"Who the doctor?" Ardeth asked her.

"No No the man. He was here. He was standing beside me." Ardeth and Jonathon looked at each other and back to Evy. "He sang to me." She was excited. "Somewhere over the rainbow. Way up high.." She sang.

Jonathon couldn't take anymore. He got up from his seat and walked out of the room.

"Mom." Alex whispered in her left ear. She turned from Jonathon to her son.

"Alex!" She giddily laughed.

"Somewhere over the rainbow..." He started singing.

"Way up high..." She finished.

"Evy?" Ardeth tried to get her attention. She looked to him and looked back. The boy was gone. "Evy please. you have to snap out of this." His voice was cracking.

"Snap out of what Ardeth?"

"Snap out of whatever consciousness you're in and wait you just called me Ardeth." A big smile came upon his face.

"Of course I did. Why are you acting strange?" She looked around the room. "And why am I in a hospital?" He leaped onto the bed and kissed her on her forehead. Evy laughed. "Okay what's going on?"

"Stay right there." He pointed to her. He ran out the door. "Jonathon!" His yells were heard from the room. A few moments later Jonathon came running into the room.

"Is it true?" He asked her out of breath. Evy looked at him strangely. "Is my little sister back?"

"Jonathon, what are you talking about?" Jonathon ran to her bed and took her hand.

"It is true." He sighed with relief.

Evy laughed and looked down at her hand. And back up to Jonathon. Only it wasn't Jonathon anymore. It was Alex. And she was no longer lying in bed. She was walking in the park. "Some where over the rainbow... blue birds sing..." Alex was singing. "Mom.. something's gonna happen."

"What do you mean, hunny?"

"I don't know I can feel something strange is going to happen."

"She was back just a few minutes ago." Evy heard Jonathon's voice. The park faded into the hospital room. The doctor was standing with Ardeth and Jonathon. "Does that mean anything?"

"Listen. if anything else strange happens, it's all normal. I can't tell you if it means anything because I honestly don't know. She might come in and out of reality. You just have to take extra care of her. Look she's back now."

They both turned to see Evy staring at them. "Hi." She sounded suspicious.

They turned back to the doctor. "Can we take her home?"

"What am I not supposed to remember?" Evy chimed in.

"What do you mean?" Ardeth asked her.

"Well the doctor said that I'm forgetting everything on purpose, and Rick said that I have to choose to remember."

"Rick?" Jonathon questioned.

"Who?" Evy questioned back.

"You said Rick. Do you remember Rick?"

"I did? No I don't I'm sorry. Who is he?"

Jonathon turned back to the doctor. "Can we please take her home?"

The doctor thought for a moment. "I guess so. It might do some good." He took out a needle from his pouch pocket. He walked over to Evy and took out her right arm. "This will keep her sustained for the car ride." He stuck it in her.

"What did you just put in me?" Evy asked the doctor. His facial features started getting disoriented. Soon the whole room was nothing but colors, and it all faded into blackness. Evy opened up her eyes. The light was a tad painful, but quickly disintegrated. She stared up at the ceiling realizing she wasn't in the hospital anymore.

"Mom's awake!" Alex's voice was heard from beside her.

"Quiet Alex. Don't disturb her." Evy heard Rick calm him.

She lifted her head off the couch and sat up. Jonathon and Ardeth were sitting in the two living room chairs. "We were wondering when you were gonna wake up?" Jonathon laughed.

"I'm sorry did I take a nap or something?" She soon realized Ardeth was in the room with her. "Ardeth!" She smiled. "What are you doing here? Imhotep didn't rise again did he?"

Ardeth and Jonathon sat there quietly. "Last time she left us. I don't want to get excited again." Jonathon whispered.

Evy got up from the couch. "Where's Rick and Alex?" She wondered out loud asking them. She had just heard their voices a bit ago. She saw the two men's serious and stunned faces. "Okay what happened? Ardeth why ARE you here and where is my husband and son?"

"Evy I think you need to sit down." Ardeth walked over to her after she obeyed. "Rick took Alex and left you." He blurted out.

"What? That's preposterous! Why would he do a silly thing like that?" She studied Ardeth's face more. "You're serious aren't you?"

"Evy... You and I.. well we kind of fell in love."

"WHAT? and where was I?" She stood up quickly and backed away from him.

"What's the date today?" He asked her.

"June twenty first why?"

"Because it's December."

Jonathon stood up quickly. "Ardeth. Don't you think it's a little early to fill her in on this little information?"

"I'd rather do it now instead of later. You never know when she will head back to another one of her realities." He walked slowly towards Evy. "Evelyn..."

Evy put up her hands to stop him. She pushed Ardeth out of way and ran towards Jonathon. "Jonathon, where's Rick and Alex? I have to know now."

"Egypt. I have the phone number, but I'm not sure they want to talk to you. Not yet anyway. I really don't think you should call them. Especially now right after you woke up and everything."

"Woke up? I don't understand!" She was almost hysterical.

"Evy.. You were in a coma." Ardeth had not turned around.

"How? What happened?" The two men didn’t answer. "What aren't you telling me?"

"Somewhere over the rainbow..." Singing came from the living room doorway.

Evy smiled. "Rick." She smiled more. "Way up high.."

Jonathon and Ardeth looked to the doorway and saw nothing. "Not again. She can't be doing this." Jonathon looked to Ardeth

"Doing what?" Evy asked them

"I think we should call the doctor." Ardeth continued to stare at her. She looked so clueless.

Evy looked back towards the doorway, and Rick was gone. Maybe she was going crazy, she thought. "I'm gonna go lie down." She said blankly. She walked passed the two men without a word, and ran upstairs. She walked down the hallway humming happily "somewhere over the rainbow." She didn't know why. It was the only thing that made her happy. She needed something to fill the void in her soul. Suddenly she stopped walking. "De javu." She said out loud.

"Mom." Alex spoke from behind her.

"No you're not real. Go away!" She clenched her fists.

"Mom. I am real. please just turn around." Evy gave in and turned around. She couldn't believe her eyes when she saw Alex standing in front of her. Her face lit up. "I want to show you something." He said seriously. The boy held out his hand for Evy to take. Evy was stunned for a moment and gave in. She took his hand and felt how cold it was. The hallway immediately transformed into party. It was a celebration of some sort. Everyone was standing around a huge bonfire socializing, laughing, and drinking. She watched all the people and somehow found herself and Ardeth sitting in the corner. She watched the body language. She saw herself giggle. she saw him kiss her on the cheek. She saw how he grabbed for her hands. She saw how she didn't resist. Finally She and Ardeth kissed. Evy turned her head away in guilt and horror. "No mom I want you to watch." He jiggled his hand which was still clasp to her. She looked up and saw Rick standing in front to the other her and Ardeth. He stood there for what seemed like an eternity, but what was only a matter of thirty seconds. He ran off.

"No!!!!" Evy yelled letting go of Alex's hand. The party transformed back into the hallway. Evy was crouched down to the ground bawling. Alex was no longer standing by her side. Footsteps were heard running up the stairs. She saw two sets up feet standing on either side of her. Jonathon crouched down to her side. He put and arm around her. They sat there for a few moments, when Evy got control of crying. She stood up and met Ardeth in the face. "YOU BASTARD!" She yelled. "You did this to me! You did this to my family!!"

"Ardeth I think you should leave for a while." Jonathon stood up. "At least for now anyway."

Ardeth nodded, turned around, and walked down the stairs. The front door slammed, which made both Evy and Jonathon wince.

"Jonathon. what is happening to me? Why do I keep seeing Rick and Alex. Why do I keep seeing the future visions of me watching me memories."

"Maybe the memories are trying to find a way back to you, and seeing Alex and Rick makes it more comfortable for you."

"I'm just so confused, Jonathon. I don't understand why me and Ardeth..." She stopped herself because she couldn't utter those words. "Why did I see Rick and Alex.. die.?"

"Maybe that was you're own conscious feeling that's what you did to them. You felt so bad that you killed them mentally, that you felt it would be easier if they just died physically."

"How and when did you become so smart?" She tried to ease the moment, but also really wanted to know how he knew so much.

"You and Ardeth really were in love." He brought up suddenly.

"But Rick and I.."

"It must have died. It fizzled. You were having problems anyway."

"But we never have problems...." Evy trailed off. "How did I end up in the hospital?" She finally brought up again. Jonathon looked away. "Jonathon, please tell me." She put her hand on his shoulders.

"You were really upset... And you just didn't want to live anymore. The lake in the backyard. We found you floating. You were in the hospital for a while. The first few weeks, Rick never left your side. Until Ardeth started coming to visit too."

"I have to call him." She suddenly said. "Where's his phone number."

"By the phone." Jonathon pointed downstairs. Evy kissed him on the cheek. "Thanks!" She ran downstairs to the phone. Sure enough there was a piece of paper with a number on it. She dialed.

"Hello?" A deep voice picked up.

A tear ran down Evy's cheek. "Ri-ick" Evy's voice cracked.

There was breathing on the other end, but no words. Finally Rick spoke up. "I'm glad you're awake." His tone was cold, but Evy knew he still meant it.

"Somewhere over the rainbow..." Nothing else came into Evy's mind, except to sing.

"Waay up high..." Rick finished. "You heard me?"

"What?"

"I sang that to you when you were.... asleep. Everyday." Rick's voice started to crack to.

"Rick. I love you. I don't even remember what happened with Ardeth. Whatever I did to hurt you I am so sorry. I love you so much, Rick O'Connel, you have no clue."

The other end clicked. Rick had hung up.
