Chapter 5-
Ravena wanted to literally spit at the man. She was sick and tired of being pushed around. Couldn’t they get it through their tiny little heads that she did NOT want to endanger her daughter by trying to escape? They made her sick. She sat there attached to the post uncomfortably for the next 2 hours and was starting to doze off...She woke up with a start when something kicked at her leg. Unfortunately, it was a boot. Rafe Steinburger stood above her with a malicious smile.
“How’s the little princess doing,” he said sarcastically.
Ravena ignored this and cried out,
“I need proof of life that my daughter’s alive!”.
Rafe stared at her for a moment before laughing sadistically and replied,
“And what kind of proof do you need, pretty woman?”
“Anything! Maybe a picture of her holding the daily newspaper or something .”
Rafe shrugged and said, “we’ll see.”
He untied the ropes around her hands and feet and screamed an order for her to get up. Ravena climbed to her feet, slowly, until they were face to face (or face to neck considering Ravena is much smaller then him) and she crossed her arms. Rafe held a giddy look in his eyes and with his gloved hand, rubbed her cheek absently.
“Pity you’re a beautiful woman, I would have enjoyed slapping your face. But, in Germany, ruining a pretty face could be considered a crime, so, I will have to focus on the rest of you.”
Ravena stared in shock at this cruel man.
“You will not lay a finger on me!”.
With that she moved away from him. Rafe shrugged once more. He threw her night bag at her.
“Change! I won’t touch you, but I will see you change into your nightgown.”
He smiled in perverse heaven. Ravena knew she had no choice, and slowly slipped of her clothes. She started to move quicker, because when a woman is in a hurry, she will change EXTREMELY fast, and she didn’t want to see any satisfaction on his face. When she was finished she turned around and sat down on the bedroll.
“I want you to leave now.” Ravena said bitterly.
Rafe smiled to himself and walked out of the tent. She moaned to herself and flopped down and tried to sleep, all the while dreaming of that mysterious man in the marketplace.
The next day, Ravena woke up to the sound of heavy machinery. Before any of the soldiers came into her tent, she quickly changed into a blue, sleeveless summer dress. She tossed her hair to the side and opened the flap of the tent, revealing the harsh, bright sun. She placed a hand over her eyes and looked around in disgust. There were workers everywhere, slaving in the hot radiance. There were wheelbarrows full of loose rock and pick axes tossed about all over the place. Most of the soldiers were either laughing in the shade or watching the workers stab into the ground. Luckily, Rafe was nowhere to be seen. She was about to sigh in relief when suddenly a hand grabbed her hair and pushed her to the ground. Ravena looked up to see Rafe’s second-in-command, Max Schneider. He was a bulging little man with a surprisingly good-looking face. But when he showed her his cold smile and she glanced at several missing teeth, she shuddered. He spoke in a squeaky, nasal German voice,
“Hello my pretty, guess what? We’re going to find out what you know today.”
With that, he lifted her up and pushed her towards his tent.
It was considerably dark and musty in there. There were 5 other soldiers examining their guns nonchalantly. Max went to the far end of the tent and sat down. He pulled a briefcase and in it revealed a small gun, some papers, and Ravena’s amulet. He pulled out the amulet and toyed with it in his fingers.
“So, Miss Desmias, did you know that we looked around for your father for years? You wouldn’t believe the disappointment when we found out he was dead. But, when one of the maids told us that he spoke to you, we knew you knew. What would be the chances of you coming to us in the end, spying on us if I remember correctly.”
Ravena looked away bitterly and tried to ignore his disgusting smile.
“But now, my pretty, it’s time to tell us where the treasure is.”
Ravena suddenly had an idea. Maybe she could buy herself time. She looked back at Max and took a deep breath. She told him everything. What her father had told her on his deathbed she had told the Nazis. Except for one minor flaw. The EXACT location of where the treasure was hidden. Ravena would have the Nazis dig up a little bit away then the real location.
