Crayons
Resist and Batik with Crayons
Wax crayons resist watercolors, water-based ink & paint. Use a white or light crayon to draw your picture or message on a scrap of paper. Brush the page with some watercolours paint (dab the page dry right away or the paint will seep under the crayon). Your secret message is revealed as the wax resists the paint. Landscape drawings work really well; your child can draw the mountains, trees and roads with crayon and then paint in the sky, fields and sea with watercolors, using a paintbrush. Secret messages are great for older children. |
Sgraffito with Crayons
A potter's term, sgraffito means scratching through one color to get to another. Apply a layer of crayon on a piece of paper (a rainbow of colors looks best). Cover the page with a layer of black or dark finger paint over it. Using an old, empty pen or the tine of a fork, your child can etch a line drawing into the black crayon. The underlayer of colors will come through in a satisfying way. The advantage with finger paint isthat your child can keep working the paint while it's wet. |
Transfer
Remember carbon paper? You can make something like it with a thick application of crayon. To begin, fold an largepiece of paper in half and unfold it. On the top half, your child should apply a generous layer of crayon in as many colors as he/she likes. Now fold down the top half over the blank half and draw on the back of it, using a ballpoint pen. Lift up the top half of the paper to expose the line drawing. |
