All Three of these Bikes are 1971 models. The First is a Japanese Domestic Monkey, the second an export Monkey for the German Market and the third an American Minitrail. The Japanese Monkey was for sale on ebay when I nicked the pictures. The bike is still listed for sale at Monkey Bike and Minitrail Fun The German export Monkey was also for sale on ebay for a reasonable (especially considering the favorable exchange rate for Americans) $1,000. It had this description:
"Unrestored and in reasonable good condition. Runs well. Stearing (sic) bearings need attention, starter-rubber missing, tank with little damages. Aluminum needs to be repolished. Very rare item. Even hard to find here in Europe. Shipping preparation costs: $ 50.00. Buyer must cover Ebay-expenses. Shipping at buyers risk." The bike did not sell on the auction but I do not know whether it is still available.
Japanese Domestic (home market) Monkey German Export Monkey American Minitrail
1.Small Headlight
2.Same Tail light and bracket as Minitrail but with small turn signals.
3.Small turn signals where reflectors are on Minitrail and horn
4.Japanese Monkey has a nice plastic side cover like later minitrails that covers a tool kit. Also note canister air filter like CT-70.
5.Center Stand
1.Larger headlight probably same size as CT-70 or later Z-50 and Monkey requires different brackets on front forks.
2.This big, different and ugly tail light appearantly complies with some German law about tailight shape and height and is set up for a big square German license tag. Anyone who knows for sure please e-mail me so I can update the page.
3.Horn but no turn signals or even reflectors.
4.Has the same canister style air filter but not the side cover or nice tool kit.
5.Side stand is same as Minitrail
6.No battery.
Japanese Domestic (home market) Monkey German Export Monkey American Minitrail Export
1. Same headlight as American Minitrail and C50
2. Also has a quick release clip on the handle bars so the entire front fork assy can be removed for transport or storage. Throttle cable and, presumably, rear brake cable also have disconnect features.
German Model uses a much larger headlight and housing.
1.Here is that tool kit, you can bet its packing more than just a spark plug wrench like the Minitrail.
2.This is a 1971 model, but the fenders are of the shorter variety like the K-1 Minitrails (69-70) Not sure if this is original but I'll try to find out from the owner.
Here is the quick disconnect for the wiring and throttle cable that allows the entire front fork assembly to be removed (note that even though there is additional hardware in the area, the hole that goes through the frame is still unused.
