A Kulig is a pre-Lenten Polish festive horse-drawn sleigh rideaccompanied by songs and music. In years gone by, as manyas a dozen sleighs would travel together as villagers visited the homes of friends, feasting and partying at each house. Sometimes the participants dressed as gypsies, beggars, etc. The Kulig grew in size in size as others joined the group of merrymakers as they traveled from house to house.
The above painting by F. S. Coburn, R.C.A. (1871-1960), is titled Matin di Noel. Undoubtedly, it is a painting of a Canadian sleigh ride; however, I think this is what a Polish Kulig might have looked like in years gone by.
