A sharp sign 
raises a note by half a tone or semi-tone.
When the sharp sign is placed at the beginning of a tune 
all F's
become F sharp

* A dotted crotchet is 1 1/2 beats long. They are rather difficult to count at this stage. You will "get the feel" for them as you play more often.
