SINCE MANY ON YOU ARE GOING TO THE PUBLIC SCHOOLS, AND KNOWING HOW TO USE A MAP IS SOMETHING THAT YOUR STUDENTS NEED AN EXERCISE LIKE THIS COULD BE USEFUL. IF YOU ARE JUST TAKING THIS CLASS LOOK AT THIS AS EASY POINTS. THERE MAY BE MORE THAN ONE MAP THAT CAN WORK SOME ARE BETTER THAN OTHERS. LOOK THINGS UP AND WRITE.
THE FOLLOWING CITIES IS GIVEN: FIND THE ABSOLUTE LOCATION:
1. PARIS, FRANCE ____________________________
2. MADRID, SPAIN _________________________________
3. GLASGOW, SCOTLAND _________________________________
4. MUNICH, GERMANY _________________________________
5. REYKJAVIK, ICELAND _________________________________
THE FIRST PART WAS EASY:
This is easy too if you follow some simple guidelines.
1. Most of the land in the world is in the Northern
Hemisphere as are most of the cities but do look teachers can be tricky.
2. Each degree of longitude is 69 miles, (rounding off to 70 miles will get you close), All you have to do is multiply the longitude by 69 or 70 and you will know about how far a location is east or west of Greenwich. (This is longitude at the equator.) Take a city with this absolute location.
39š 44'N 104š 59' W
We know it is north of the equator, most land locations are, but for the moment just look at 104š 59' W. Multiply 104 by 69 or 70 and you will get 7176 or 7280 from Greenwich. Take a look at the map on p. xii in the Atlas and you will find the time zone -7 hours from Greenwich. Now you have a ball park figure. Find the map for the Central United States, you might have to use different maps for different locations. 104š runs eastern part of Colorado, but that is still not close enough. The city we are looking for is between 104š W and the 106š W using this map. Look in the back of the Atlas after you have narrowed down the possible cities between 104š and 106š. The city is Denver. After awhile all need to know is the time and you can narrow the East and West locations. Check the back of the Atlas to be sure some cities can be very close and with out looking them up you will get the wrong answer.
6. 40š 40' N 73š 58' W _________________________________________________
7. 33š 32' N 7š 41' W _________________________________________________
8. 22š 50' S 43š 20' W _________________________________________________
9. 46š 49'N 71š 13'W _________________________________________________
10. 30š 00' N 90š 05' W _________________________________________________
FIND RELATIVE LOCATION OF THE CITIES FROM ABOVE 1-10 The first five cities are 1-5 and are given. Cities 6-10 you have to find them then describe them. (What I am looking for is any good description. This is a little open ended, use the guidelines) (1 pt. each)
These are guidelines and overlap sometimes.
1. Many places are in a country, like the
United States, Russia, or some other country.
2. In many cases they belong to a political sub
unit like a state or province. This one can be difficult outside of the
United States, Canada, and Mexico. I want the state or province in the
United States, Canada, and Mexico.
3. Most cities are located near water. This can
be a river, lake, or the sea. Be careful sometimes cities are on a river,
but are also close to the sea as well get both if when it applies.
4. Generally they part of a region like the Midwest
in the United States, or Western Europe, or some other region. Remember
some regions have different names it depends on the map and what you might
bring into the course. You can't go wrong it use the one in the corner
of the map. Remember it is the title in the upper right hand corner.
5. They are northern, southern, eastern, western
part of a country or region. (Sometimes the region has a direction in it
like the Midwest.)
6. They many be near another country, body of
water, mountains, or city. Nearness can be expressed by miles, kilometers,
or time.
7. If a city has the same name, I usually want
the more famous, the largest, but always ask it is a leaning exercise.
8. If you want to put some personal in relative
locations like it has a great hotel, beaches, baseball or football teams
I can live with this it shows you are thinking.
9. If it is the capital of the country I want
that. (There are two ways to do it, one is in front of your eyes if you
can find the legend the other is for your infomation. The key is in your
Atlas if you know where to look) (1 pt. each) Put the name of the city
First.
10. An encyclopedia either paper or on disk can
help find some the material if you have trouble reading a map. It can tell
you how far the city is from different places. It will tell you if it is
on a river, and perhaps talk about attractions.
LIST THE NAME OF THE CITY FIRST: I want more than just a single line on most of these cities. There is space. Do not guess I want you to write. If you have problems talk to me. I'll give them back to you if they are inadequate.
