City survival techniques for women

By JAYAGANDI JAYARAJ

IT WAS a informative and fun-filled three hours for some 50 women who attended the City Survival training, which was held at the Atria Shopping Mall in conjunction with its Safety Week recently.

The session was conducted by Malaysian Volunteer Fire and Rescue Association (MVFRA) chairman Capt. K. Balasupra-maniam, who taught the women, young and old, how to confront a would-be attacker, the basics of self-defence when attacked, ways to strike at the vital points of an attacker and how to convert common items like handbags, combs and pens into useful defence items.

They were also taught how to handle prank calls, maintain proper security at home as well as to handle vehicles safely.

Balasupramaniam said the aim of the training was to equip women of all ages with enough knowledge of self-defence and precautionary measures to reduce the risk of attacks against them, especially rape, snatch thefts and kidnapping. Such crimes, he said, were on the rise.

“Should a woman face an attacker, it’s important for her to know that the attacker is as afraid of her as she is of him.

“Don’t panic; channel all your energy into being confident and face the attacker with available self-defence items.

“Always remember that most attackers are cowards at heart, so confidence and courage when facing them will make them back off in most instances,” said Balasupramaniam.
