Women taught to protect themselves

A PUBLIC education talk entitled City Survival Knowledge for Women received overwhelming response from women of all ages and backgrounds.

The four-hour talk, which was conducted by Capt. Balasupramaniam of Malaysian Volunteer Fire and Rescue Association Academy, was held at Mantissa Institute in Taman Tun Dr Ismail.

Organised by the Lions Club of Kuala Lumpur Pantai Hills in view of the rising crimes against women in recent times, the talk included subjects from rape and sexual assault to detecting hidden cameras in changing rooms and exercising commonsense when alone in car park and at home.

According to organising chairman Stella Ang, the talk was aimed at sharing essential information with women on ways to stay safe and not be caught in any unfortunate circumstances.

Club president Sara Ooi said the talk was aimed at equipping women with knowledge on how they could protect themselves.

“We would like to educate women on the need to be in control of their own safety and not depend on the authorities to do so,” she said, adding that women usually became victims of unscrupulous acts simply because they lacked awareness of the dangers around them and took for granted the security of their environment.

She hoped that corporate bodies and other non-profit organisations would also hold similar public education sessions for their employees and the community.
