HISTORY (1986-2002)
The indoor sharks started playing the superleague comp the first year it started (1986) and still compete in that comp today. They have won the club championship trophy virtually every year without fail despite the competition being on our heels (particularly in the last 2 seasons) & several changes in the criteria for the award. This comes from an even spread across netball & cricket whereas most other arenas seem to be good at one or the other. Certainly in my time at the club our netball sides have been dominant with premierships expected rather than hoped for. The Ladies A Grade & Mens Netball have both achieved great success. Many players from these sides have also achieved success at state level.
Players like Hayden & Lou Dickenson, Richard Papps, Jason Holding, Michael & Julie Miller, Daniel Hobson, Kate Ridley, Camet Leslie, Kylie Crossley, David Jaffer, The Riley Bros. & Deanna Blowes etc. have played a truckload of netball and have a great knowledge of the game. I also notice C.Zimmerman & T.Sambell dominating the honourboard in the late 80s & early 90s so I assume they could play a bit too.
Apologies to the numerous other great players not mentioned.
On the cricket side of things we always seem to win at least one superleague flag a year, with most of the success coming from the veterans sides & the ladies cricket. We also used to have good mixed cricket sides but that grade no longer exists. Unfortunately for the club, our A Grade has never won a flag, with this years (2003) double exit mirroring that of a club called Port Power, hopefully both these sides will come through with the goods asap and celebrate with appropriate gusto. The A grade flags tend to follow around a Mr. Shane Martin (SA Cobras Captain) who is generally regarded as the best current indoor cricketer in our state. The most famous players to play for our club would be Peter "Glads" Gladigau who was by all accounts extremely quick in his hey day (still playing today, must be 38 odd), Michael "Geo" George who represented Australia & duly won a world cup in South Africa for his efforts & Shane Deitz (current state outdoor cricketer). Apparently one of the quickest overs ever bowled by a bloke in a sharks shirt was by Mark Conroy in the famous 96 B Grade Grand Final which the sharks won.
It would be wrong not to mention the following players for their efforts on the indoor cricket court, & in particular for the Morphett Vale Sharks. Scott "Scooter" Heywood, Ian "Wally" Watkins, Barry "Baz" Kearsley, Peter "Harry" Richards, John Hopkins, Mick Miller, Chad Campbell, Matt Skrokov, Peter Cranstone, Neil Johns, David "Wilbur" Draper, Neil "Slipper" Davis, Jason Seymour, Matthew Verrall, Keven Lane, Lee-Anne Hunter, Charmayne Sorrell & Leslie Draper.
Once again, apologies to the numerous great players not mentioned.
The club also plays superleague 8 ball & have been very successful, winning a hat trick of premierships (2000-2002) along the way.
Special mention also, to the following people for their achievements in the way of umpiring. Paul Sheedy, Bob Fradd, Belinda Mason & Janine Hook.
The ICC Sharks (outdoor cricket) were formed in 1995 & joined the Adelaide & Suburban Cricket Association. They started with one team in Sect. 5 and went on to win the premiership undefeated. They now field 4 teams, Sect. 1, Sect. 3, Sect. 4 & Sect. 6 (2003/2004) and have secured five premierships along the way, the highest being a Sect. 2 flag in 97/98 & the most recent being a Sect. 3 flag in 99/00. We struggled last year finishing 8th, 12th, 9th & 9th but have dropped Bs & Ds down a section and have a new home ground/clubrooms, so expect a stronger showing across the boards in the 2003/2004 season.
Notable contributors to the clubs success would have to be Michael Miller, Jason Temby, Rick Pittard (Life Member), Bob Fradd, Peter Richards, Michael Todd, Kevin Croke, David Draper, Jason Seymour, Neil Johns, Peter Cranstone, Mick McKay & Kevin Lane.
Anyone who wants to play cricket (indoor or outdoor), or netball, can contact the club on 8384 1244. Or even if you want to join/put together a beach volley side or an indoor soccer side.
COS IF YOU AIN'T A SHARK, YOU AIN'T WORTH SHIT!
